"agents" poems
Many believe they know the law Because they were arrested; Others know how to teach Because they too were tested. If you have a religious question, They attended church; Mention you've an ache or pain, They diagnose your hurt. Should you bring up politics, Republican or worse, They'll explain Democracy Cause they've been free since birth. Admit your car is pinging, Your faucets aren't behaving, The oven isn't cooking right, Your fridge is warm and shaking, The air conditioner's out of whack, Your furnace has turned blue, They'll tell you what to do: Change the thermo-coupler. It's always their one answer. Say you like this stock or bond, An investment that's appealing, They'll  discourse that all agents Are cunning conniving stealing. On Monday mention the big game, They'll re-play, play by play, As if you slept right through it. If you hear a rousing band, Attend a movie or a play, Know-its are informed critics, Once they were stagehands. They pose as friends and family, Waiting for an opening, To disrupt with diatribe, To display how much they know. I know what I'm on about, So let me advise you, I'm a Know-It-All poet, All I write is true. So, *Never miss the opportunity To keep your mouth shut too*.

Know-It-Alls
Mum had been gone a couple of months, six I think… (An ordinary day, feeling hollow but doing OK) …when I realised I could get rid of the sofa. I thought it was ugly, she thought it was a bargain. A sofa’s not a keepsake and it was certainly no heirloom. I’d not inflict it on my kids. I got rid. If I could’ve had her back then? I would’ve done. Even if it meant keeping the sofa. Redecorated. Bought a new telly. Spent frivolous amounts of cash on scatter cushions. She disliked scatter cushions. I thought they were cosy. My little boy drew on one of the cushions. On purpose. I was about to smack the back of his legs… (Mum would have, she smacked me when I was little) … I stopped. I never wanted to. Had known all along, somehow forgotten. If I could’ve had her back then? I would’ve done. But she would not smack my children. Mum had been gone a year… (Planting bulbs, feeling conspicuous carrying a shovel ‘round the churchyard) …and I missed her. It was as hot as the day she died. There was no breeze up on that hill, no cloud. Beautiful views stretched right out to the sea. My little boy had grown, he helped carry water and dig holes. My baby was learning to walk, she wobbled on uneven turf between the headstones. I wanted Mum to see. If I could’ve had her back then? I would’ve done. No question. Mum had been gone three years… (Bulbs were doing OK. There was nothing left to plant that rabbits wouldn't nibble) …and I realised it was time to move on. I kept the ghosts quiet while agents showed people round. The house sold. We moved away. A warm, terraced place in a small town by the sea. Dad died. Mum has been gone eight years and I miss her. Looking out from the Downs across cliff-top and sea, the churchyard seems nothing more than a soft-grey fleck on the green edge of town. If I could bring her back now? Everything’s changed. Ghosts exist. They sit in empty chairs and speak kettle-whistle. Wishing us well.

don’t tell me “I love you” ~ by Roxanne, for Cyrano~
Macavity’s a Mystery Cat: he’s called the Hidden Paw— For he’s the master criminal who can defy the Law. He’s the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad’s despair: For when they reach the scene of crime—Macavity’s not there! Macavity, Macavity, there’s no on like Macavity, He’s broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity. His powers of levitation would make a fakir stare, And when you reach the scene of crime—Macavity’s not there! You may seek him in the basement, you may look up in the air— But I tell you once and once again, Macavity’s not there! Macavity’s a ginger cat, he’s very tall and thin; You would know him if you saw him, for his eyes are sunken in. His brow is deeply lined with thought, his head is highly doomed; His coat is dusty from neglect, his whiskers are uncombed. He sways his head from side to side, with movements like a snake; And when you think he’s half asleep, he’s always wide awake. Macavity, Macavity, there’s no one like Macavity, For he’s a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity. You may meet him in a by-street, you may see him in the square— But when a crime’s discovered, then Macavity’s not there! He’s outwardly respectable. (They say he cheats at cards.) And his footprints are not found in any file of Scotland Yard’s. And when the larder’s looted, or the jewel-case is rifled, Or when the milk is missing, or another Peke’s been stifled, Or the greenhouse glass is broken, and the trellis past repair— Ay, there’s the wonder of the thing! Macavity’s not there! And when the Foreign Office finds a Treaty’s gone astray, Or the Admiralty lose some plans and drawings by the way, There may be a scap of paper in the hall or on the stair— But it’s useless of investigate—Macavity’s not there! And when the loss has been disclosed, the Secret Service say: “It must have been Macavity!”—but he’s a mile away. You’ll be sure to find him resting, or a-licking of his thumbs, Or engaged in doing complicated long division sums. Macavity, Macavity, there’s no one like Macacity, There never was a Cat of such deceitfulness and suavity. He always has an alibit, or one or two to spare: And whatever time the deed took place—MACAVITY WASN’T THERE! And they say that all the Cats whose wicked deeds are widely known (I might mention Mungojerrie, I might mention Griddlebone) Are nothing more than agents for the Cat who all the time Just controls their operations: the Napoleon of Crime!

(for Cyril Connolly) The piers are pummelled by the waves; In a lonely field the rain Lashes an abandoned train; Outlaws fill the mountain caves. Fantastic grow the evening gowns; Agents of the Fisc pursue Absconding tax-defaulters through The sewers of provincial towns. Private rites of magic send The temple prostitutes to sleep; All the literati keep An imaginary friend. Cerebrotonic Cato may Extol the Ancient Disciplines, But the muscle-bound Marines Mutiny for food and pay. Caesar's double-bed is warm As an unimportant clerk Writes I DO NOT LIKE MY WORK On a pink official form. Unendowed with wealth or pity, Little birds with scarlet legs, Sitting on their speckled eggs, Eye each flu-infected city. Altogether elsewhere, vast Herds of reindeer move across Miles and miles of golden moss, Silently and very fast.

For years, they stole and robbed from our pockets. For years, they murdered what faith we had, Killed what hope we gained for ourselves. Poverty loomed over us like death, the Loss of materialistic payment. Currency controls; We have none. Beginning with a silly addition to parchment and paper. A "stamp act," if you will. Oh, the rarity of a few extra Coins to spend on a cake for the mistress! Rebellion and violence against the act increased, The Sons, the ones of Liberty left Blood splattered on the ground we walk on. Fear installed in the hearts of agents, Collecting and shivering as coins ring in their satchels. Soon, though, they left. Resigned and replaced themselves with Another thief. The Townshend- adding cents more to imported, Provided, goods. The people starved for things They need and can not afford. Naive. They had materials. They had the skill, But no need to use what they contained in their minds And their bodies. Begin the new world! Spin your own yarn and twine! Build your own shoes! You don't need the goods From old English factories and makers. The disagreements and retaliation, the lack in Morality in the brainwashed heads of soldiers. A bothered redcoat drew his gun, leaving holes, Horrible voids. The dive from cliff to cliff, swing from tree to tree, The ****** of blood and The determination to be freed from the grasp of A controlling monarchy. The greed they exhibit and the cruelty. Revenge for taking what is ours? Sweet tea, English tea, Soaked in the harbor. The tax will be no more! The need for peace, rejected by one Who wanted control and a steady reign. The isolation, suffocation of the new land like an Abused child. It was only a matter of time before the child ran away.

Contentment is the greatest evil in the human grab bag of emotions. It’s born out of the head of ignorance, it resides in the heart of the blind. It manifests its evil doctrine of passiveness throughout the body, until fully enslaved by inaction. It turns agents into sun tanners, activists into office workers, outlaws into accountants. It puts preservatives into culture, it laminates laws, it places crowns on faceless leaders. It slaps a smile across the ***** the beaten, the neglected, the racially profiled. It mutes news casts, veils the homeless man that lives behind office buildings, glorifies the paycheck. It makes the walls of homes seem bullet, terror, bomb, corruption, and death proof. It allows sleep at night, it kills the monsters under the bed and the ghosts in the closet. It causes hundreds of thousands of suffering people to simply, disappear. It insures, “birds like to be caged,” and “pain is just part of the human condition.” It whispers these misconceptions like a priest insuring his congregation of the power of Jesus. Contentment, you see, corrupts the very concept of progress. Progress is deemed by the million-pieces-of-paper-owners to be founded in terms of economy. Progress is deemed by the people-who-stop-us-from-returning-to-state-of-nature to be founded in terms of control. Progress has forgotten it’s maker, just as dying old men forget that they were once bounced on a loving knee. Contentment leaks from the Western world and infects all those around it. When you are no longer content you will begin to see the holes in the patchwork of life, and wonder how it was you hadn’t seen them before. When you are no longer content, you will at last demand change.

So Putin helps Trump win an election And subsequently feels elated. He is still anticipating How he will be compensated. Who are the ones who cheer and clap As Putin takes a victory lap? Watching the Trump administration Blame and distrust the FBI Also tickles Putin as Trump Makes it a target to vilify. Watch Putin cheer and clap As he takes a victory lap. When Trump says he doesn't believe Our intelligence agents here But eagerly accepts whatever Putin tells him, one thing's clear: Trump is willing to cheer and clap As Putin takes a victory lap. When Russia starts a conspiracy theory And blames Ukraine for election meddling, Many Trumplicans here believe The devious lies that the Kremlin is peddling. How can Americans cheer and clap As Putin takes a victory lap? When Trump speaks with the president Of Ukraine and crudely tries to extort Favors from the Ukrainians And threatens to pull U.S. support, Putin supporters cheer and clap As Putin takes a victory lap. As here we see a chilling loss Of democratic values, we Will ask ourselves whatever happened To hope and opportunity. Who then will cheer and clap As Putin takes a victory lap? -by Bob B (12-12-19)

As Putin Takes a Victory Lap
Holocaust Poem: "On The Slaughter" by Chaim Nachman Bialik loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch Merciful heavens, have pity on me! If there is a God approachable by men as yet I have not found him— Pray for me! For my heart is dead, prayers languish upon my tongue; my right hand has lost its strength and my hope has wilted, undone. How long? Oh, when will this nightmare end? How long? Hangman, traitor, here’s my neck— rise up now, rise and slaughter! Behead me like a dog—your arm controls the axe and the whole world is a scaffold to me although we—the chosen few— were once recipients of the Pacts. Executioner, my blood’s a paltry prize— strike my skull and the blood of innocents will rain drenching your pristine uniform again and again, staining your raiment forever. If there is Justice—quick, let her appear! But after I’ve been blotted out, should she reveal her face, let her false scales be overturned forever and the heavens reek with the stench of her disgrace. You too arrogant men, with your brutal injustice, suckled on blood, unweaned of violence: cursed be the warrior who cries "Vengeance!" on a maiden; such cruelty was never contemplated, even by Satan. Let innocents’ blood drench the abyss! Let innocents’ blood seep down into the congealing darkness, eat it away and undermine earth's rotting foundations. Al Hashechita ("On the Slaughter") was written by Chaim Nachman Bialik in response to the ****** Kishniev pogrom of 1903, which was instigated by agents of the Czar who wanted to divert social unrest and political anger from the Czar to the Jewish minority. The Hebrew word schechita (also transliterated shechita, shechitah, shekhitah, shehita) denotes the ritual kosher slaughtering of animals for food. The juxtapositioning of kosher slaughter with the slaughter of Jews makes the poem all the more powerful and ghastly. Such anti-Semitic incidents prompted a massive wave of Eastern European emigration that brought millions of Jews to the West. Unfortunately, there have been many similar slaughters in human history and the poem remains chillingly relevant to the more recent ones in Israel/Palestine, Rwanda, Bosnia and Kosovo. Chaim Nachman Bialik "On The Slaughter" translation
When I get too blue I laugh at myself pick up the leash and take Mr. Brown to the dog park. He shows me how to be carefree will jump and bark drink a gallon of water and lick whomever he chooses without a worry in the world. Everybody admires his ***** What kind of dog is that? He’s a Rhodesian Ridgeback. an African lion hound, but he’s scared shitless of my cat. what’s yours? A Visla. Looks like yours, only smaller. Did you see that American Foxhound? That s.o.b. can jump! Yeah, too bad he can’t pay my mortgage. The young photographer shows off his brilliant Doberman’s latest trick – a double backflip catching the Frisbee ten feet high landing on all fours. The old lady with the blind daschund says, “Oh, oh, isn’t he wonderful?” She claps her hands in delight. The canine Noah's arc show runs all day with the entry of pugnacious Sharpeis the arrogance of Poodles the inscrutability of giant Malamutes. the pride of leash-holders. Gradually tree shadows darken the sawdust and people start parading home, the **** athletic girls with their boyfriends’ Shepherds the slow old men with their greying Labradors the lady real estate agents with their tiny Shih Tzus. And then it’s silent I’m the last one there alone in the gathering dusk still hearing echoes of joyful barks realizing how funny it is that so many people look just like their dogs but I don’t think about it, I just marvel at all this joy.

The Creator looked at the elephant and said: I made you big so you could be gentle To the mouse he said: I made you small so you could walk tall But over millions of years you two could exchange places and one become the other. I know I shoved the lot of you in an Ark Because Noah was being a pesk asking for rain when his washing machine ran dry So I had to fill the oceans to stop that old man from complaining all the time. Besides I needed the bark from the trees of the Ark to make me a small tug boat to carry some DNA samples of my own, in case, the lion ate the cow, the tiger chewed on the cat and the fox tricked the rest with his cunning ways You see, my friends, there was no grass, or snakes or bird cages, or trees for the monkeys to swing on. I thought of many things before I gave the building plans to Noah and his sons. Only one was a builder the rest were bums, who never held a hammer or learned how to tie two bits of trees together, leave alone building an ark to hold the worlds whole creation.Thankfully there were no real estate agents pushing the price up or bankers charging interest. The mafia thought of charging an entrance fee for each pair, but before they could do that the rains came pelting down and the tickets got washed away in the storm. So you see the Ark was a joint venture between The Americans and Chinese and Indians because they were willing to multiply quicker than the rest once Mt Sinai rose up to meet the oak leviathan from underneath. And so my dear elephants and mouse and fox and snake and bird and lion and tiger. Noah and his wonderful Ark was a script written well ahead so that Russell Crowe could get a part playing Noah in a computer generated extravaganza where only the actors and actresses who could afford to pay a price to be in it - were involved. (1) I posted a poem at hello poetry - and what happened? Somebody started following me I received a "notification" (I can’t say “much to my gratification”) that someone started following me I think it went something like: “Naked Blueberry started following you” (2) Oh what did I do? What did I dodo? All I did was to post a poem and not a word from you - O cruel menacing follower - not a comment not an expression of your displeasure but you started following me What did I do? What did I dodo? (3) Sure I may tell bad jokes and write verse that daily gets worse Yeah, I may look ugly like I stole a look from my fav Mad magazine and once in a while I say something about organisations - but does that warrant you following me and transforming me into a near-nervous wreck? O Naked Blueberry what did I do? What did I dodo - why do you follow me, you naked stalker? I lie in bed now afraid and my wife worries that I cry out often in sleep: “Hence, You Naked Succubus - Follow me not!” And I dare not approach my car but after looking under bonnet and boot and below the carriage I dare not write a word now but fear that you and your agents will follow and stalk me with ne’er a word, ne’er a warning At least tell me, please O follower O Naked Blueberry, O Protean Terminator O **** Redberry   and all the others in various guises (I know you guys are all one person, namely Lily Raw and Ready) - tell me why you follow, show me cause of your anger O what did I do? What did I dodo? What should I do? What should I dodo?

Dear future boyfriend.... I will assume you will break my heart even before we speak. And hold on to every word like it were the air that I breath. I will ignore the good things that you do. And search for every mistake meticulously. I promise to never have faith in you and to always expect you to fail. I promise to put you on a pedestal that you'll fall off of and to always go running to my friends the second you speak out agents me. And when I do something wrong and you say something about it, I promise to always find a way to blame it on you, Dear future boyfriend I promise to drain you emotionally so that you cant ever find the strength to leave me, And to always ,make you feel like you cant leave me alone. Dear future boyfriend, I promise that when it ends ill make Facebook posts about it so that all my friends can see, and so that they can all take part in a breakup that was largely to do with me ... Dear future boyfriend, pleas.....don't be my future boyfriend

Rapid Eye Movements cruise down the Autobahn, driving dreams of soldiers slaying the Beast in the East: seeds hidden in the cuff links that return home for the victory parade. The victory parade of the new millennium is a mirage: desert sand creeps through the streets of Basra; spray painted slogans of “Aryan Nation” are left behind on pock-marked walls. High level terror alerts scroll across the Fear o' Dome, breeding paranoid glances from commercial-class passengers while they fly above fenced camps where centralized secret service agents watch the unloading of another train. "Son, do you forget the sacrifices? Have you lost all your respect? Okay, it’s possible that the Feds were influenced by the Purebreds— a minor repercussion of maintaining our national security. It isn’t even about racial purity— you are all mixed now, anyway. Whether female, black, jew, or gay, we must unite together as a nation; raise its flag with pride, and fight against a common enemy! This enemy is trying to disintegrate the cornerstone of our free society! Son, can you not see! Not see-notsee-notsea-notsi-notzi-natzi-nazi-natzi-notzi-notsi-notsea-notsee-not see!" _____ —cold sweat. I awaken to remnants of nightmarish images sifting through my mind: flocks of carnivorous sheep with invisible shepherds. The dream had felt real— solid, like flesh-out reality. I rush out of bed, just to make sure. From my bedroom window, I see the neighbour’s Iron Eagle weathervane goose-stepping towards the west. A lawnmower growls in the background.
