I hadn't really written much poetry before 2014. It quite suddenly became a vehicle for me--and an exciting challenge--to reflect on life and to comment on what I see. As of now, my favorite way to express my thoughts and feelings is with rhymed accent verse with from two to seven main stressed syllables per line. Sometimes the number of stressed accents alternates line by line in a regular pattern throughout the poem. I aim for simplicity and directness and for something easily graspable. Also, many of my poems are created to accompany a melody in my mind, so many resemble songs.
When we think of our past leaders,
We have quite a list
Of presidents from Washington
To the current narcissist.
But if you think that any other
Presidents were bad,
Hands down Trump's the most corrupt
President we have had.
Whether it's through cryptocurrency
Or insider trading plots,
Trump keeps on amassing wealth;
Just connect the dots.
Trump's two sons are quick to show us
That they won't be outsmarted;
They've found ways to bring in money
From a war their father started.
If you're a felon and if the courts
Convicted you of fraud,
Send some money to Trump, and then
From him you'll get a nod.
His current scheme: to sue himself--
In a manner of speaking--
By suing the IRS for billions
Of dollars! He's so self-seeking!
Want access to the president?
Know that nothing's free:
Everything he does is a matter of
"Hmm. What's in it for me?"
He and his admin team just love
To muddy the waters by stewing
About corruption and say that others
Are doing what THEY are doing.
What about rules and regulations?
To Trump they don't apply.
He CLAIMS he acts in our best interests.
That's just one more lie.
It's such a joke when people say,
"Oh, he's NOT so bad."
Hands down he's the most corrupt
President we have had.

We now have a ranting and raving
President who's very unwell.
Knowing that, members of Congress
Really ought to be raising hell.
A president who sends out posts
On social media late at night--
Fifty-five posts within three hours--
Definitely, is not all right.
Blasting his so-called "enemies,"
Accusing Barack Obama of treason,
Obsessing about stolen elections…
Trump has lost his sense of reason.
He labels folks as traitors and then
Stupidly calls for their arrest.
He posts AI images
Of people with whom he is obsessed.
Meanwhile, his war with Iran goes on,
Inflation's shot up, prices are high,
Many people have lost health care,
And the Trump admin continues to lie.
The government's not being upfront
About the total costs of the war--
This senseless war that shouldn’t have happened.
And we're worse off than we were before!
He talks of building his ballroom and arch
And altering the reflecting pool.
If you question him, you'll be
The object of his ridicule.
Because of the strange, alternate
Reality that Trump envisions,
Clearly, as president he cannot
Be trusted with making important decisions.
When will Republicans in Congress
Grow a backbone? People are waiting.
Their failure to stand up to Trump
Is totally exasperating.

In Hungary, the people have ousted
Viktor Orbán! Hip, hip, hurray!
A new leader, Péter Magyar,
Is promising a brand new day.
After 16 years of Orbán,
During which time folks had to cope
With hateful repression and limited rights,
Magyar is offering freedom and hope.
Not all folks deserve to have
Equal rights, Orbán claimed.
Only straight white men should possess
All the power, he maintained.
Orbán controlled the media.
Freedom of speech was thus curtailed.
Let's all hope that the autocrat's
Corruption now becomes unveiled.
Mobilizing supporters with fear
And hatred was for Orbán the trend.
Magyar says Hungarians must
Be united; the hatred must end.
Hungarians brought democracy
Back to their country. 'Twill be a shame
If we in future elections here
In America cannot do the same.

Melania spoke at a military
Mother's Day event this week.
Was what she said about Donald Trump
Really meant to be tongue-in-cheek?
She said that Trump is a strong leader.
(Is that comic damage control?)
Then she went on to add, however,
"His empathy transcends the role."
THAT got a laugh from the crowd, it did.
Surely the comment was made in jest.
If she was being serious,
It was a vain attempt at best.
Maybe she's trying to compensate
For Kimmel's "expectant widow" joke.
Whatever the case, the silly comment
Is something that she cannot revoke.
She has learned from the best, of course:
Tell a lie so frequently
That like-minded fools will eat it up
And see whatever you want them to see.

Who is winning Trump's illegal
War in Iran? Iran for one.
Iran is controlling the Strait of Hormuz,
While Trump believes he hit a home run.
Who else? Putin is also winning.
Sanctions were lifted, so we can't spoil
Putin's efforts to make more money
For weapons by selling Russia's oil.
Who else is winning? The oil companies.
While we are paying more at the pump,
They are making billions of bucks,
Thanks to Netanyahu and Trump.
Ah, and Eric Trump and Don Jr.
Are also cashing in on the war.
A drone deal with the Pentagon
Is going to bring in money galore.
And what's Trump doing? Talking about
His ballroom, of course, and telling lies
And "crazyposting" day and night
While looking for people to criticize.
He loves to say people have low IQs
Or have low ratings, which goes to show
How insecure he is because
His OWN IQ and ratings are low.
More and more people are realizing
That most of Trump's decisions are wrong.
It's taken them a while, for many
Of us have known that all along.

Melania and Trump are both
Lashing out by going for broke.
Their target: Jimmy Kimmel, because
The two of them can't take a joke.
Trump loves to dish it out,
But he can't take it. Not a bit.
What Kimmel said was actually
Rather funny, I must admit.
Melania as a glowing expectant
Widow has a funny effect.
Maybe the image hits too close
To home. That's what I suspect.
Is Melania embarrassed
Because she knows that no one can see
How any self-respecting woman
Could stand to be with that SOB?

"A feeble-minded, trigger-happy man."
That's what folks are calling Donald Trump--
Except for sycophants who sing his praises
In an attempt to kiss his royal ****
When receiving updates on the war,
Aides cannot tell Trump what he must know,
For he gets so enraged since he's unstable.
It makes you wonder who is running the show.
Trump says the war is over and then back on;
He says the strait is open, and then it's closed.
The more he rambles on nonsensically,
The more his utter madness is exposed.
The loss of lives, destruction, and economic
Upset in the world don't worry him.
He is more concerned about his ballroom
While he fills his coffers to the brim.
"Never before have we seen so little effort
To hide so much corruption" a senator said
When discussing the Trump administration,
Where grift and money-grabbing is widespread.
Republicans could easily put an end
To all the chaos--now! this very hour!--
By being less afraid of Trump's disdain.
But they would rather hang on to their power.
Stability, security, and freedom
Are all in jeopardy. So sad to say.
Do Republicans in Congress even
Care about the people they betray?

Excited, Trump is telling us that
Iran has opened the Strait of Hormuz.
In his rambling, deranged manner,
He couldn't wait to share the news.
But wait. The Strait of Hormuz was open
Before Trump started his senseless war.
Because of the huge mess he made,
We're worse off than we were before.
Thanks to Trump and Netanyahu,
Many innocent lives have been lost.
If anything at all was achieved,
It was done so at a great cost.
Trump has boasted that now Iran
Has undergone a change of regime.
Yes, that's true. Unfortunately,
The newer one is MORE extreme.
The death and destruction and rising prices--
Because Trump has shaken his fist--
Have put the U.S. close to the top
Of the world's "Countries Most Hated" list.
Whether the Strait of Hormuz stays open,
Now is anybody's guess.
One thing we know: if people suffer,
Donald Trump couldn't care less.
Trump will start a destructive blaze,
After which he'll stand and shout,
"Fire!" and hope that he can get
Credit for putting the fire out.

A cruel and stupid thing to do!
Hypocrisy, of course, has no
Political affiliation.
What a shame it is when folks
Cannot rise above temptation!
A lot of people had high hopes
For you and thought you'd take us far.
Acknowledging your record in Congress,
We saw you as a rising star.
But then these charges! They are not
A privilege that power grants.
Tell me: why can't some men keep
Their you-know-whats inside their pants?
As of now, we still don't have
All the facts, and oftentimes
We judge in haste, so let's hear out
The victims of the alleged crimes.
You were right to resign from office.
You yourself must take the blame.
But ****** predator, Donald Trump,
Really ought to do the same.

If you voted for Donald Trump,
Did you vote for prices to rise?
For the Trump administration
To feed you nothing but constant lies?
For someone who is out of touch
With what Americans really need
And who's a sick, deranged and demented
Narcissist who's driven by greed?
For having to skip meals in order
To pay for needed medical care?
For being at risk because the head
Of the health department is full of hot air?
For sending our well-trained soldiers--our kids--
Off to fight on distant shores
Because the president wants us to be
Involved in unnecessary wars?
For filling our cities with federal agents
And even misusing the military?
For turning against our long-time allies
And favoring Putin, an adversary?
For having to watch Trump's appointees
Support a president who defiles
The office with grift and major corruption
And cover-ups of the Epstein files?
For laws to make it harder to vote
Because Trump says our voting is flawed
And makes up absolutely ridiculous
Stories about election fraud?
If that is what you voted for,
Well, you got it. I hope you're happy.
Don't blame me if now we're stuck
With a situation that's downright ******
