I remember as a child
I met a girl
It was a brief encounter
But one I'll remember

It was at the swings.
Everyone loved them fondly
And when she asked for mine
I gave it to her gladly

While that may not seem so grand
And maybe it shouldn't
But when I look back at that moment
I finally understand.

See that girl who had stood before me
Wasn't like the rest.
She bore many a scar.

What my child eyes didn't see.
My child mind never thought
Was that before me stood a burn victim.
Instead before my eyes, a human being stood.
Someone who seemed fun, maybe a new friend?

I miss that child. Not only her but me.
I miss the child whom through innocent eyes,
Saw beauty in the world where others pain, or shame
Who gladly gave a swing,
Not to a victim but a friend.
