These Shoes On My Feet
The day I fell off a mountain, these shoes were on my feet
When I lay broken upon the jagged rocks, these shoes were on my feet
When we walked the valley and through the creek, I felt Mother's natural peat,
The day he slipped, I rescued him with these shoes upon my feet
We made a fire and sat in peace with nothing but the sleet
The day we grasped and found nothing there, these shoes were on my feet
We drank the icy cool that she gave to us with open mouths to greet
When rubble and we flew with momentous speed, these shoes were on my feet
The day you brought me to the sunny hill I felt the heavenly heat
Nothing below us once off the edge, even in freefall these shoes are on my feet
Together we hike and row and climb like two brothers always in beat
I look down to see nothing but rock and know I die with these shoes on my feet
Rocks we skip on the glass-like river so smooth, eloquent, and neat
We approach our doom with mighty force my shoes laced on my feet
Singing of folk with not a care in the world, I and my brother do speak
We do collide with the rock with unspeakable speed these shoes take the shock for my feet
You lend me your tool out of kindness and I know it only takes two for a fleet
Our bodies cease to move but the water still falls, these shoes twitch not on my feet
I lay beside you, it feels safer than home here with these people tonight that I meet
My shoulder is bashed and I lay on my front, I look back to see the shoes on my feet.
This poem is about the time my friend Matt and I went to visit his family in Kentucky over the holidays. His grandfather owns and farms over 480 acres of land. We went hiking everyday. One day we were faced with a cliff drop off into the Kentucky river. The cliff was quite steep and we trekked down to the river, then back up. Matt wanted to get close to a waterfall so we did. Matt slipped and I instinctively reached for him. He drug me down with him and everything we grasped for came out of the ground. I wasn't able to save him in the way that I wanted to. We slid off the edge and fell down to the rocks below (about twenty feet). Both of us, aside from a bruised shoulder on me, were miraculously unharmed so we both had a prayer then decided to each mark this occasion in our own ways. I wrote this later that night in the bed at the house. Half is about us falling and the other half is about all the other great things we did that week. I hope you enjoy and please, tell me what you think.

The Misfit
Running through the fields I used to find your face with sunlight bouncing off your lilly cheeks in the Spring
Flying up so high I would go kiss that lilly sun and try not to burn my feathered lips against your face
Please do not blush, my love, your smile will scorch the Earth we walk and fire will tango with my soles
My blackened feet will trudge along down your snowy path my love and leave my charcoal footprints in your wake
I would sail across the sky to catch your trail down in the fields and when the grass and flower'd plants do part deep down in the meadow, Love, I know just where my anchor shall be cast
As a boy I dreamt of you and all that you might be
I'd chase you like a hare in fields and trap you in the trees
You'd fly out like a raven every single time
And I'd run until my heart collapsed so's long as I were mine
Girl you set my heart on fire it's burning with your deep desires and nothing's what I want if it isn't you
Pumping red hot blood you send it coursing through my firey veins and boil up to the brim of my eyes
I'm blinded can't you see, my sweet, you've locked my eyes you've stole the key and nothing you can do can offset my gaze
You dance along with hurricanes, hips swing side to side like rain, hair whips here and there with the winds
Your steps, mockingbird, mimic quakes on Earth and herds that trample through plains deep in the ground
When you smile there is a ray of sun piercing through the stormy dance you conjure with your magic eyes of gray
Will I ever sweep you off your lovely, perfect, snowy feet with my dance that I dance for you so neat
Down your door of safety I will beat until you recognize I'm the twisted, shifted, misfit made for you
Love me till the moon becomes the Earth
Love me till your heart goes in the dirt.
I wrote this as a song in math class in a set of installments over a three day period. If you're familiar with "The Tallest Man On Earth" you can sing this to the tune of "Pistol Dreams." That's the song that I had stuck in my head when I started this and it goes with it perfectly. On the second day I had Bob Dylan's "Shelter From the Storm" still fresh on my brain from the drive to my class that morning. So from "As a boy I dreamt of you" to "And I'd run... long as you were mine" is to the tune of "Shelter From the Storm."

Said the Vixen to the Fox
I once met a ***** running through the woods
She was sly and swift upon the daisies she stood
I opened my mouth to speak her some word
What happened next I'm not sure I heard
With a bat of her lids, the greens did open and close
And with a jaw forming words I suddenly froze
"You may be a fox with your bushy red tail,
But I've something to tell you that turns roan into pale.
I know what you're thinking, and it's not so, not true.
This ***** speaks your thoughts clear as morning's dew.
We'd make well together, you and I, no shock
All I need is to hear it from you, my Dear Fox"
I stood for a moment still perched on my hill
As my mind took this idea and began to trill
Could it work? She and I? Were we meant to be?
Yes, of course. After all, this fox only a fox can see.
Ten minutes gone and ten minutes not wasted
Have you forgotten what is that those dreams tasted?
Say not a word or say every word you know
Nothing is as scary as the bedtime crow
The reaper of joy to both lady and gent
Leave this field before your smiles lament
Yes, flee the bird, that black Titan of sorrow
the wingéd demon who makes you long for the morrow
Pick up your arrows and bow of pure heart
Pierce the creature and watch him fall to Death's cart
See him down to the pit of Fire
Where he shall burn in price for his dark desire
Now he is gone, worry not, sleep well
Nothing can touch you, your nightmare's in Hell.
From time to time, every now and again, I'm presented with some luck
In the form of you telling me that you're happiest while around we muck
I can say with my whole corazon that you've made my night more than once
Perhaps without knowing, sometimes on purpose, you leave me standing there like a lovedrunk dunce
You're sweeter than cane and plenty more than able
All I want every so often is to hear you say it above the table
I don't know what you're thinking, you're one I can't read,
But I assure you no doubt that my heart beats like a stampede
When you're around, I want nothing else but your company
Whether I can see you or touch you or the room houses just me
I like you, you know? Of course you've found out
I've told you so much I've worn the phrase out

21 Days
It's been 21 days since I last saw you and I'm starting to shake at the seems.
My thread's coming lose, my brain's turned two blues, and body's gone deaf with silent screams.
Unrav'ling thoughts, twisted dreams and scapes painted gold with high hopes you finally face me.
Tides wave good bye, your beach is bone dry, and your ship is still stuck out at Sea.
The water's rough and all turned white with tears of lost sailors' brides.
But I built this boat with memories of you and I alone in the tall red grass March ides.
You told me "you, you're important to me. Don't ever hinder to ask. I'll gladly share my thoughts"
But you didn't know that deep down below I had a dark sandy drowning black past.
I row and sweat and mesh to your waters till I light my fire with burning shoulders dire want to feel your fingers laid in mine once again.
You say it reciprocates and I hate to question, but there's no way you share this impossible connection.
I traveled out here, I'll die in these waves in hopes that you seek my love too.
My face grew long and pruned and drained out there while I waded and waited for you.
Yeah I waited and waded and rowed and I wrote all to the beat of your heart. I remember it well even after all of these years.
I know just how it goes thump thump, thump thump, thump thump, thump thump.
I hear it again as your waves crash down. I feel your skin as I'm washed to the ground.
I can taste your lips in the salt of my casket where I'm sent to wait. I can feel your lips in this salty blue casket.
I sit in my sleep as your gentle hands keep me safe in your fluid sweet basket
Of Hate that you kept me from my whole life by the thought that you existed- my one true delight.
You cup my body and hold me as I sleep in a trance. No alarms.
Well I've been at it my whole life, I've been looking for YOU and I've earned my rest in your arms.
I see you now, now that it's over, and you look so shockingly right.
You've been there all along you're never too far gone, In death you've given me sight.
As I sink down to my tomb I think only of you and how much I regret the fight,
That I had in my head throughout my whole life your presence is my Juliet's knife.
I reach the bottom of your Ocean and stare into space.
Out of breath out of time I suddenly don't mind.
You're mine and I know it. You've made it clear to me in death.
For 21 years I've missed my Wonderful Elizabeth.

Finish Me
I suppose you're gone now, but I'll make due
Despite what you say, I still want too see you
You're sleepy I know, you've been there with me
Nothing I can do but await the dark to flee
We'll see each other again when our time's come
in sync will our hearts beat like a blood red drum
I've left you once, an inexcusable feat
I'm lucky we still talk, let alone weekly meet
You're one of the few and not like the rest
You're different and wonderful and my favorite guest
I appreciate you, but not enough I fear
You give me a feeling like a warm butterbeer
Now I must ask, if you'd be so kind,
Please finish this poem with me in mind?

— The End —
