Mighty Junior
Zach Hirsch Oct 15
The outlook wasn't brilliant for the pups that day.
They were faced with a bobcat and he hadn't come to play.

Angel cried and ran and Licorice did the same.
That was the day, that Mighty Junior got his name.

I looked up in deep despair and could barely take a breath.
Junior was headed towards the hissing beast, he hadn't run like the rest.

An awful feeling came over me and all the air seemed to leave my chest.
Junior was but a little pup and not up to such a test.

Junior went right at him, raised his paw and gave the big cat a smack.
I don't know if it was shock or fear but the cat didn't strike back.

Junior barked and chased the stunned bobcat away.
The legend of Mighty Junior started, it was born that day.

He'd tussle with pitbulls, bobcats and alligators and gave them all more than they could take.
Mighty Junior's reputation grew when he chased a seven footer in the lake.

Junior was a wonderful loving dog, of that their should never be a doubt.
He also never backed away from a fight and thus far had won every bout.

The Doctor's gave terrible news, that cancer was Junior's fate. That at just five years, he'd seen his last birthday and wouldn't make the next date.

Mighty Junior stepped up as the fighter that we know, he beat it month after month through three different rounds of chemo.

After eleven months, it seemed Junior couldn't breathe and a fierce pneumonia had set in. Maybe he wouldn't make his birthday, was this a fight even Mighty Junior couldn't win?

A few days later we'd make a fabulous discovery, Junior had beat the odds and made a miraculous recovery.
Fireworks filled the air as we celebrated Junior's birthday night.

Mighty Junior turned six and had won his toughest fight.
His championship heart was as big as his bark or bite.

When Junior suffered a stroke almost three months later, we knew he'd beat it like he'd done the bobcat and alligator.
Junior was down on all the cards, in fact it seemed a route.

He could barely breathe, rarely ate or moved when you kissed his snout. We still knew he'd come back, this is Mighty Junior we're talking about.

Oh somewhere in the world the sun is shining bright.

Somewhere families are playing with their new puppies and their hearts are feeling light.

Somewhere people are laughing and somewhere children shout.

But there is no joy here, Mighty Junior was knocked out.
An Ode to a great dog and a great friend
