On this Earth
Octavian Cocos May 2021
On this Earth – our lovely planet –
Which spins quickly and is strong
One can tell that there is something
Obviously going wrong.

Too much evil, too much malice
People have become so mean,
Have forgotten about virtue,
Their soul is small, unclean.

If we went to Mars, I wonder,
Or to our moon, some day,
Could we make a world much better
Than the one we have today?

Or would be far more exciting
To jump like a graceful deer
In a parallel dimension
Through a wormhole, without fear?

But we'll miss the Earth so badly,
Or at least so I believe,
Because here we still are able
Like in Paradise to live.

Supreme happiness
Octavian Cocos May 2021
Love is wondrous when it's true
It can light your heart's desire
And if someday dies the fire
Memories will stay with you.

Memories are so profound,
And so faithful, there's no doubt,
But if they will be wiped out
Happiness will stick around.

Happiness is good, fertile
It does not depend on love
Or the memories thereof,
But of things that make you smile.

Will Shakespeare wrote nice sonnets for us all,
Because he loved a young man from his heart
And so do I, as if I hear his call,
But I prefer the woman cute and smart.
The blonde, brunette or brown-haired, I don't care,
Tall, short or thin or sometimes even fat,
The woman with a soul as light as air,
And with a mind as lively as a cat.
Too bad that Shakespeare died long time ago
I bet he would have liked to be his friend,
Because I write the way he used to show,
So that the lines may shine for years on end.
Both I and Shakespeare share the same good views
For love is our dear and holy muse.

Request for my son
Octavian Cocos May 2021
When the time has passed, leaving joys or scars,
And you'll be like God, always in control,
Flying night and day among shining stars
Look around and search for my lonely soul.

And make sure you take with you all the time,
When you guide your ship, feeling brave and free,
That old-fashioned picture, not at all sublime,
But which proudly shows only you and me.

And when you are sad or the world is fierce
Take it in your hand, watch it, don't be silly!
And with your big eyes drowned in bitter tears
Maybe you'll remember that I loved you dearly.

Yet, I hope you'll come in a sunny day
Back upon the Earth, like a vagrant wave,
So, I'd like to think that you'll find the way
And you'll put a rose on my quiet grave.

Then, before you leave, listen and take heed
For my hot request will raise from the ground:
Run back home, my lad, 'cause you are my seed,
Take care of your mom while I'm not around!

The Sphinx knows
Octavian Cocos May 2021
Happiness, enjoyment, sorrow,
Glory, gain, pathetic fall
All these will be gone tomorrow,
Poor dark shadows on a wall.

Heaps of money, real treasures,
Goods, estates and many shares,
Will provide sweet, earthly pleasures
To the poor and greedy heirs.

Only change is everlasting
And it turns the world around
Death's stillness is disgusting,
As the prophets always found.

The old Sphinx watches with sorrow
How we think that we are kings
Knowing that today, tomorrow,
Time erases all the things.

Magic in the cabin
Octavian Cocos May 2021
Flames are dancing in the fireplace
In the cabin only we are present
My heart's beating at a faster pace
And the bed is soft and very pleasant.

Night is falling, probably too soon,
Snow has stopped, at least I have this feeling,
I can hardly see the crescent moon
Through the steamy window near the ceiling.

In the room, the magic is divine
We are silent, but I touch your shoulder
And I kiss you, thinking you are mine,
Even though you're young and I am older.

You are huddling gently on my chest
Then I feel the warmth of your embraces
In the end we stop to sleep and rest -
Only God can see our happy faces.

Dreams and reality
Octavian Cocos May 2021
How many times I saw your pretty face
In my tormented dreams, vivid and strong,
But then you disappeared without a trace
And I kept looking for you all night long.

I climbed the mountains with their snowy tops,
I sailed the ocean and the gloomy sea,
I fought the tidal waves splashing fine drops,
And yet, I didn't know where you could be.

And I kept asking all those who I met.
As if I'd been insane, completely mad,
Because my mind was awfully upset
And my poor heart was really, really sad.

I thought you were below the earth, my dear,
Or that you hid behind the clouds above,
I yelled at you and yet you couldn't hear
And didn't know about my unquenched love.

But one day, which seemed bleak and full of gloom,
The destiny arranged for us to meet
I was your teacher in the lecture room...
Oh, our story is so nice and sweet!

A walnut fallen on a narrow lane
Seemed very nice and tempting, so to speak,
That four black crows descended, I maintain,
To grab it with their long and pointed beak.
But one of them, for sure, had much more luck
And took advantage of the stir and fight,
And while avoiding to be caught and struck
Seized the small nut and hastily took flight.
After a while, it flew down to the ground,
Because the other crows gave up the chase,
Then cracked the nut and baffled looked around,
For it was hollow in its inner space.
That's why in life I have this wondrous creed,
Both husk and core should be refined, indeed.

The letters – twenty six – are rather few,
But words are many and around they swirl,
They're like the dew drops moon is shining through,
Which glitter in the night like beads of pearl.
And all these words long sentences can form
Or phrases even longer and refined,
Which sometimes seem to us like a wild storm,
But other times they are so nice and kind.
And boring lectures quickly start to flow
Or other more inspired and sublime,
Which in a while will be forgotten though
For they can't be remembered all the time.
The stream of words becomes a waterfall,
But lovers say „I love you” and that's all.

The moon is exquisite in the warm night,
And from the sky she easily can see
I am surrounded by her silver light
And her cold ray is now enticing me.
Without a voice, she calls me all the time
To fly and reach her full of bliss profound
I smile at her, because she is sublime,
But my true love is near me, on the ground.
For long ago, a girl of noble birth,
I've heard that fell in love with Morning Star,
Because she didn't want a dear on Earth...
Her story was unhappy and bizarre.
But I prefer my sweetheart every day,
Because she's here, the moon is far away.

The moon
Octavian Cocos Jun 2021
– Come, big moon, in your full glory,
Show your face so bright and fair
Tell me an enchanting story
About palaces up there.

Have you ever seen, I wonder,
Who's inside, what kings, what czars?
Who speaks with a voice like thunder,
Who throws comets and blue stars?

Who made our Earth that's spinning
And this Universe so vast?
Was the Word in the beginning
Which created all so fast?

The moon whispers from her tower:
– Go to sleep and rest your brain,
Even though I have great power
I'm tied to this earthly plane.

Maybe...
Octavian Cocos May 2021
Maybe you're not a king that has been crowned
Maybe you're not a sage, but a poor lad
Yet, my dear man, if you were not around
The world would be so wretched and so sad.

Maybe you're not as graceful as a swan
Maybe you're not an artist so unique
Yet, lady, if you didn't laugh at dawn
The world would be so cheerless and so bleak.

Maybe you're not as restless as a child
Maybe you're not so full of energy
But without you, my friends, the Earth were wild
And the whole world would live in lethargy.

The dagger of harsh speech pierces the chest
Its shiny blade cuts deep and clouds the brain
The heart is pounding, cannot find its rest
Because is filled with sorrow and much pain.
Death doesn't come to take its gloomy toll,
Because the sap of life is very hot
And so, the wounded plays his sour role
As if he were content, but he is not.
The body's healthy and the arm is strong
The face is proud, the smile impresses all,
But in his life, a lot of things are wrong,
That's why beneath the glaze is bitter gall.
The wound of flesh needs medicines and care
The wound of soul wants love from everywhere.

Between the pages
Octavian Cocos May 2021
With loving words, as weightless as the vapour
I'd like to make a poem meant to last
And with my hand, like people from the past,
To write it down with ink and quill on paper.

Then I shall take a book, the most appealing,
The one I know is somewhere on the shelves,
Watching the pale leaves turning by themselves
And getting thus a pleasant tingly feeling.

I'll hide the rhyme between the middle pages
As if it were a jewel, dear, refined,
Made not with tools, but with my subtle mind,
With toil and skill, without rewards or wages.

The years will pass and I shall watch them flying
I shall be old, my face will lose its smile,
But our soul down here is in exile
That's why at my demise I won't be crying.

And maybe someday you will feel like reading,
Because you're bored or cannot sleep at night,
And craving for a world with much more light
You'll take that book, which is the most appealing.

And you will surely find between its pages
The poem hidden without too much fuss
And you'll be glad to read things about us
In this old book that tells about the sages.

Desire, hesitation, arduous quest
Long waiting and great pain that we're apart,
But fate is harsh, although I do my best,
It doesn't want my love to reach your heart.
So you remain mysterious, unknown,
And even if I try to see your face
You're far away and I stay all alone,
Hoping to feel the warmth of your embrace.
If I could fly like seagulls in the sky
And see like fish in waters dark, profound,
I'd understand what method to apply
To bring you here, to know that you're around.
Alas, I don't have wings to soar and fly
That's why I hope that you will hear my cry.

When grass becomes my sky
Octavian Cocos Jun 2021
When grass becomes my sky
And I am just blue dust,
When unobserved I die
Leaving this world of lust.

When in the people's minds
My name will be accursed,
When everybody finds
In me only the worst.

When God His body turns
And runs away from me
When your desire burns
Once more my eyes to see.

Do not become upset,
But on your way you go,
Don't mourn and don't regret,
I can't dispel your woe.

Remember me, don't cry,
Get out of your dark den,
For everything goes by
And we shall meet again.

Rise, mother!
Octavian Cocos Jun 2021
Rise to the sky for good, wonderful soul,
And leave behind the sadness of this dirt
Be happy and pursue your lofty goal,
Don't you observe I laugh, although I'm hurt?

Go up, like that balloon that left my hand
Back in those days when I was just a boy
And when into the cosmos you expand
Look straight ahead and never lose your joy.

And on your journey, do not fear at all,
Don't let the grief to grab you, but do pray
For Jesus Christ all happy souls will call
And He will guide them on the holy way.

Don't be depressed that you have left us here
And felt the need to travel far and wide,
Because our souls, my mother sweet and dear,
Will love each other, even if you died.

And when you reach the Heaven, bright and true,
Wait calmly, for the wheel will spin like mad
And one fine day, as we have promised you
We'll be again together: you, me, dad.

And your mind is deeply stained,
If you have a bogus smile,
Wear a mask and you are saved.

If your friend, who gives you all,
Without mercy is betrayed,
If your soul is really small,
Wear a mask and you are saved.

If you know that in your life
You have lied and misbehaved,
If you can't get rid of strife,
Wear a mask and you are saved.

If a person you have met
About you will want to ask
Open up, but don't forget
To keep on your daily mask.

Death examination
Octavian Cocos May 2021
The day I take the death examination
I'll surely pass it, so don't be naive
To mourn and sigh and try to bring salvation,
You cannot stop me, I'll be forced to leave.

Don't be upset, don't let your face to suffer
Time drifts away and never will return
Keep walking then and in your heart be tougher
Enjoy your life, forget any concern.

Do not shed bitter tears and stop your whining
In vain you cry, you cannot change a thing
People are born and for a while are shining,
But in the end all die – the poor, the king...

And if one day you miss me, please be clever,
Remember that my soul is not remote,
But you won't find it in my books; however,
It dwells within the poems that I wrote.

The dance
Octavian Cocos May 2021
The music starts descending from the ceiling
I stretch my hand inviting you to dance
You stretch yours, too, and you are so appealing
That right away I'm falling in a trance.

I hold you tight and see your eyes are glowing
I touch you gently and you understand...
My heart is pounding, time is swiftly flowing
I wish we stayed like this for years on end.

And all the people seem to have departed
There's only you and me on the dance floor
I've stepped on your small foot, but you're kind-hearted
And smile at me as nicely as before.

I look at you and see you are on fire
Your breath is like the summer scented air,
We're dancing cheek to cheek, with much desire,
My heart is happy and your face is fair.

It's like a dream, your lovely body answers
When I caress your shoulders in my trance
And therefore we have disappeared as dancers
Because we've melted in this graceful dance.

Last wish
Octavian Cocos Jun 2021
When I shall fall asleep for good, my son
Don't be uspet, don't cry and do not frown
Read all these lines at leisure, one by one
And then I beg you not to let me down.

I shall not ask for something you can't do
Because I've loved you dearly until now,
But time has come and without much ado,
Please keep your promise and respect your vow.

Take this dead body, made only of dust,
This wretched garment that I used to wear
And have it burned, in you I put my trust,
Then take the ashes with the greatest care.

And after that, go quickly to the tomb
In which my parents have eternal rest,
Spread there the ashes and forget the gloom,
Because I want to lie upon their chest.

And if you feel a tear in your big eyes,
Do not attempt to change your attitude,
But let it fall and watch a flower rise
By which I'll show my deepest gratitude.

Foolish flake of snow detached
From a cloud white as a dove
You believe you are unmatched
For you look down from above.

Arrogantly you behold
The poor people – how unfair,
'Cause your heart is icy cold
You are lofty, you don't care.

The light wind turns you around
And sometimes you gently swing;
Floating high above the ground
You are haughty like a king.

I don't know what you have planned
Foolish flake of whitish snow,
But you've fallen on my hand
And you melted here below.

The way my thoughts fly swiftly all around
The way the moon floats high above the ground
And in the distance die.

The wind blows like a breeze
The way I feel your breath upon my face
The way you give me gently your embrace
At dawn, beneath the trees.

The waves roll wild and free
The way the people can't endure the strife
The way they get prepared for a new life
And in the world they flee.

Time has a downward trend
The way the raindrops fall into the sea
The way the fruit detaches from the tree
And life comes to an end.

As if my mind were weary and upset,
I feel I know you as I know my thumb,
And maybe in another life we met.
I fear to blink lest you should fly away
Or my sweet dream should lose its blazing flame,
So, we both wait a sign, a shining ray,

Octavian Cocos May 2021
Hidden somewhere, in a forgotten case,
Full of white dust and lonely as a ghost,
Lies an old picture, quiet in its place,
The one that in the past I liked the most.

I wanted many times to take it out,
Feeling that I was totally unjust,
But every night and day I was in doubt,
I didn't want to rummage in the dust.

And maybe in the darkness, every year,
The colors faded and I'm feeling sad
Because this picture, which I held so dear,
It might be tarnished, looking very bad.

But even if I leave it in its case
And it will never see again the light
It will remain, with its discolored face,
The picture that once gave me much delight.

And in peace my path to take.

I'm not doing something odd,
But I feel I'm pushed somehow
By the fate ordained by God.

Why to bother, to get mad
And to cry with bitter tears?
I know that you think I'm bad
For I'll be away for years.

But until we'll be some day
Old and burdened by the past,
Despite ruin and decay
Our memories will last.

And in other life, my dear,
Who knows, maybe I shall grieve
When you tell me loud and clear
That it is your turn to leave.

Like John Milton, Allan Poe...

To outshine the crowd below,

To make rhymes inspired and gay
Full of love, as all demand,
But composed in such a way
That the people understand.

How I wish that those who read
To be filled with ecstasy,
And to get immersed, indeed,
In a world of mystery.

I would like to have much fame
And bronze statues – I can't wait –
So that people will exclaim:
“Gosh, this poet is so great!”

And your good heart beats deep into my chest.
Even though many people are around,
Living on our planet day and night
We are two standards, lovely and profound,
Because from Paradise we took the light.
But one bad day, a cunning serpent came
And tricked you, for alone you used to roam,
I couldn't stop you, what an awful shame,
And thus we lost the heavens, our home.

To comfort me and to surround

And yet, although you smile and talk,
Your sight grows dim, your arm is rigid,

When it's dark, through the dense wood
The lost solitary *****
Makes his way, covered by hood,
In his hand with a bright lamp.

When the ship sails late at night
And by compass is betrayed,
Stormy waves having to fight,
By the beacon will be saved.

At the young age is the same
Those who want to see you thrive,
For yourself to make a name,
Guide you closely, teach you, strive.

On the other hand, it's true
Others also, day by day,
From afar they guide you through
Not to get lost on your way.

Longing
Octavian Cocos May 2021
Somewhere, back in time, in a world of bliss
I was living carefree, floating in the Light
I had no idea that I'd choose amiss
And I'd be expelled to this world of fight.

But the fate is harsh, ready to attack
And it never asks how you want to live,
It gives all the things, then it takes them back
Pushing you from high into its fine sieve.

It's the divine law, we are tiny sparks
Ruthlessly cast off from the starry sky
We end up in bodies, become lambs or sharks,
And forget the heaven when on Earth we sigh.

But I feel within such a wondrous thing
A desire burning and it is so odd
That it doesn't matter if I am a king
For I long for home, and I long for God.

And I hear a voice talking in my mind
That although on Earth we are mean and fight
If I can love more and be good and kind
One day I'll be able to rejoin the Light.

— The End —
