I haven't been the worthiest of men,
The wisest or the holiest of all,
I haven't been majestic, now and then,
But I have loved you and you can recall.

I haven't been a king or a bold knight,
I haven't had a fortune to defend,
But we have stayed together, day and night
And I have been your priceless loving friend.

It hasn't been my lot to be refined,
I haven't spoken trying to look smart,
But all the words that ever crossed my mind
I've always uttered from my very heart.

I've never been a scientist, for sure,
Or an inventor making a breakthrough,
But I have been good-natured and mature
And with my love I have surrounded you.

Maybe I was forgetful, maybe bored,
It's not a bad excuse or a refrain,
But in a station, totally ignored,
I've bought a ticket for this woeful train.

In it, all kinds of people – neat, in rags...
Who try so hard their journey to complete,
With longing feelings, carrying many bags
And all competing for a better seat.

What strain, what spite, what anger, what a wail
What howls, what crying, what a silly pride,
What ugly words, what fighting on the rail,
For everybody wants to see outside.

I watch appalled this strange and foolish show
As if I'm at the theater, in the stalls,
And if I could, I'd do a trick to go,
Far, far away, beyond these lousy walls.

I wish the train would stop its crazy race
At the next station and to turn around,
So as to reach again the starting place,
But it is running forward like a hound.

I beg the fate to make a change somewhere
To move a switch, my state to be restored,
Because this train is heading to nowhere
And I am sorry that I got on board.

I walk on rusty leaves, which now are dead,
And leave behind the trees scratching the sky
A thousand words are rushing through my head
That lovingly we uttered, you and I.

The leaves are rustling and they seem to crawl
Under my feet, which crush them with their weight
I have no aim, I just want to recall
How blessed we've been by our earthly fate.

Because it didn't give us wealth and fame
Or other things that people do enjoy,
However, it ignited our flame
By sending us a lovely little boy.

And when we're old and gray and without scope
It doesn't matter if he says good bye,
Because, like all the parents, we shall hope
To see him one more time before we die.

How many times I saw your pretty face
In my tormented dreams, vivid and strong,
But then you disappeared without a trace
And I kept looking for you all night long.

I climbed the mountains with their snowy tops,
I sailed the ocean and the gloomy sea,
I fought the tidal waves splashing fine drops,
And yet, I didn't know where you could be.

And I kept asking all those who I met.
As if I'd been insane, completely mad,
Because my mind was awfully upset
And my poor heart was really, really sad.

I thought you were below the earth, my dear,
Or that you hid behind the clouds above,
I yelled at you and yet you couldn't hear
And didn't know about my unquenched love.

But one day, which seemed bleak and full of gloom,
The destiny arranged for us to meet
I was your teacher in the lecture room...
Oh, our story is so nice and sweet!

You fell asleep upon my chest, my dear,
And I am guarding you with greatest care,
As if you were a china *** placed here,
Which has been worked with skill to look so fair.

I turn and see your tired, pretty face
I stroke your silky hair with pure delight,
You don't wake up, but your heart starts to race
When in your ear I'm whispering, “Good night!”.

You've plunged into the world of dreams you weave
You laugh and cry, and sometimes even speak
I feel like Adam with his lovely Eve
And I can't help but kiss you on the cheek.

I pull the quilt and feel that you agree
I look at you once more in the dim light
I say a prayer both for you and me
And then I fall asleep into the night.

Two sparkling diamonds and a ruby lie
On her beloved hand, so soft and white,
Today, he looks at them with a cold eye
Although the people marvel at their sight.

Two sparkling diamonds and a ruby cut
With greatest skill, as for a mighty king
And smoothed with love and carefulness somewhat
To fit exactly on a golden ring.

Two sparkling diamonds and a ruby are
Like her red mouth and big eyes, there's no doubt,
Which seem to cry and suffer from afar
For a sweet love that suddenly died out.

Two sparkling diamonds and a ruby now
Have added value and they will prevail
Because they surely make an honest vow,
To glitter, but to also tell a tale.

O, Christmas tree, adorned for celebration
With painted globes and stars in constellation,
With icicles and tinsel wound in coil
And with all kinds of candy wrapped in foil.

You raise your top and scratch the lofty ceiling,
For Santa Claus you want to look appealing,
Knowing that presents he will surely bring
For all the people who will come to sing.

Because it's Christmas Eve, that's why tonight
In our souls the carols will put light
And our eyes like precious gems will spark
When we will sing to Santa in the dark.

O, Christmas tree, adorned for celebration
And yet, I think I have a revelation:
Although your place is in the forest domes
You choose to die to come in our homes.
