Was it cold
Standing in his shadow
No hand to hold
Praying for tomorrow
Things get better
Than they were the day before
Did your arms get tired
From picking yourself
Up off the floor

Did you ever have dreams
To run away
To start a new life
In another place
With a different name
This great big world
Has so many roads to choose
Until you turn around
And realize it's only you

Shes a woman
In a man's world
A mother and a warrior
But she's still
Daddy's little girl
She's a woman
Trying to make her way
Looking through the window
And waiting for the day

Did you ever think of me
Did you ever see me passing by
Could you see the stars
When you looked
Through the window at night

I hope there comes a day
When your free to make a choice
I hope you're doing fine
But I'd love to hear your voice

Shes a woman
In a man's world
A mother and a warrior
But she's still
Daddy's little girl
She's a woman
Trying to make her way
Looking through the window
And waiting for the day

When I think of those New York lights
Friday nights
Taking a stroll
Through the city streets alone
The days are never warm
And the people are cold
Sitting there freezing looking for a hand to hold
It's gotten a little crazy
You can hear it on the news every day

The lights dont shine
As bright as they say
In New York City
And a rose can't grow
Between the sidewalk cracks
The marquee won't save your soul
And once you sell it
You can never have it back

I never realized the passing faces
Of different races
Walking down the Avenue every day
Captivated by the different sounds
The rumours around
The city that never sleeps
At least that's what they say

The lights dont shine
As bright as they say
In New York City
And a rose can't grow
Between the sidewalk cracks
The marquee won't save your soul
And once you sell it
You can never have it back

Release your hold from me
Turn me loose and let me fly
Over hilltops green
I'll soar with wings on High
The world below me
Is a picture frame
While I'm in a place
Where everyone knows my name

I have a home
On the other side of the skyline
Saying Goodbye
To a life I never knew
Birds like me are meant to fly
Towards a place
That's much bigger than I
Just on the other side
Of the skyline
There's a world I've never seen
With smiling faces
The grass is always green
On the other side

My eyes that look like yours
Are two great mirrors
To turn the pages
And open doors
May there always be wind in your trees
And the stars to light your way
I hope there's a breeze in your sails
With the smell of a bright new day
I can't tell you anything
That you don't already know
I have a home in the sky
And the bible tells you so

I have a home
On the other side of the skyline
Saying Goodbye
To a life I never knew
Birds like me are meant to fly
Towards a place
That's much bigger than I
Just on the other side
Of the skyline
There's a world I've never seen
With smiling faces
The grass is always green

If I looked inside your heart
What would I find
Would I see the pain
And the dreams you left behind

Who would I see
A child or a mother
An innocent mind
And a so like no other

Did you have any where to go
When the lights at the end
Of your block didn't glow
Did you have any where to hide
When you were scared
While the storm raged inside

If you looked on the mirror
Would it be who you hoped to see
The lines on your face tell a different tale
While the stars point out your dreams

Did you take a chance in New York City
Where the Marque lights shine so bright
Or did you try your hand in Vegas
Before your money was gone
And they threw you out into the night

I'm not a rich man
I don't have a hat above my door
I dont have a bed with silk sheets
Or fancy shoes to throw on the floor

I may not have enough
But what I have is mine
I'm not anybody special
But I'm still in my prime

Who are you
When no ones looking
Where are you
When no one's there
Are you a king on top of the world
Or a pawn without a care

I dont have a house on a hilltop
But I can see the lights just fine
And the stars that always show
With the birds above the sky

I may not have enough
But what I have is mine
I'm not anybody special
But I'm still in my prime

Who are you
When no ones looking
Where are you
When no one's there
Are you a king on top of the world
Or a pawn without a care

I'm somewhere
Trying to get nowhere.
I'm caught between
Halfway in
And good and gone.
I'm somebody
Trying to be a nobody one day.
