Pleasant Valley Morning
Daniel Howard Jan 2019
Drops of dew sliding
ever so slowly
off the leaves of a bush.
A flag, gently fluttering.
Sunlight, a solitary ray,
peeking through the clouds,
yearning to burst open.

Simple pleasures to begin the day.
Though indoors, closed in,
a peacefulness, subtle, prevails.
Nature's delightful sounds do not
reach, yet neither do
the roar of engines on the highway.

The air conditioner softly hums.
A clock ticks on and on.
Faint music from another room.
A babbling brook it is not.
Yet, must one not find beauty,
peace, love, in every situation?

I have discovered it in this place.

Meditation on the Yough
Daniel Howard Jan 2019
Grassy embankment,
artificial yet placidly beautiful,
with mixed emotions
I turn to you for refuge.

Sun breaks,
slightly through the clouds,
with just enough
to lighten my dark mood.

Quiet town,
convergence of landscapes,
with loving heart
I say farewell to you.
