Modern Girl
She's clearly an addict;
She mainlines through the needle
Of her Sprint Blackberry,
Inserted directly into her brain.
Her texting flows in her arteries like oxygen, using up
Her minutes like the ATP of a crashing sugar high

HAVANA

Walking down Calzada de Infanta the Old Man
Eventually found the woman he was looking for:
She was young, pale, with dark hair and
A smile he knew was only partly born of a warm
And generous nature.
In her way she was very beautiful.
Her needs were few but intense he knew, and he
Immediately proposed
That she stay with him,
An arrangement to sustain her life.
It included his commitment of unconditional love,
An illusion usually limited to those far younger.
But, implicitly, and with her understanding -
 She was no fool,
His proposal included the ultimate pre-nuptial agreement:
Time,
The cardiac divorce;
No lawyer would be hired for that one.

Hunger
HUNGER

When I think of you
I marvel at your fragility,
How little you sustain yourself with.
If I could do what I would, I would,
I would bring you coq au vin with carrots glazed in brown sugar,
And onions glaces a brun, ringed with pommes duchesse;
And saffron pistachio rissotto with lobster ravioli
Bathed in a tomato champagne reduction sauce;
Or salmon poached in Alsatian Riesling,
Smothered in a rich Hollandaise, on a queen-sized bed of spinach.
I'd fatten you up,
Feed your body;
But of course it isn’t proteins, calories, fats, carbohydrates
That you quest for:
That would be so easy.
