Much as I love you, do as you need
is it so very hard to understand
that I need you to do the same?
You held me in your arms, rocking
me as a babe, both of us burning,
too sick to see any other.
You taught me to scrub and clean
fix the dinner, lunch, bake cookies
and hug the children at night.
You screamed and raved and we forgave
we saw you hurting and tired
and made the beds and brought flowers.
It's not just you any more, the world
has grown larger, full of other children
other loves and hugs and emotions.
I remember you with honor, listen to your cries
but just once could you think that others
might have a different opinion and need.
I love your dedication, your sweet belief in love
your smile that only smiles can exist
and God your constant companion.
But love isn't enough, honor not enough
unless equal gift is provided in turn
Mother, just once could you obey
and not hurt others' rights and need love, too.
