*Sadness invades
every corner left open
Ears falling deaf
to the thoughts that do scream
Heartbeats are breaking
in moments of worry
Tears on the edge
of a fracturing dream

Anguish now splintered
as window panes shatter
Closing the curtains
to fend off the fear
Still there is one,
hoping you will hold on too
Look in your heart
and you’ll find I am near

Taking your hand,
bringing light to the darkness
Trudging a path
so your feet do not bleed
Lifting you up
when your spirits are drowning
I will be there
in your moment of need

I am not much
just a friend who adores you
Taking your pain
as if it’s all my own
Heeding your call
nothing else it does matter
A long as I breathe
you are never alone

her wishes she guards,
like every beat of her heart;
and plans too far off
she easily discards.

they offer comfort, no cure,
t'is the best they can find;
she calls it quality assured,
takes it one day at a time.

tomorrow a hope,
next week is a prayer;
living forward with foresight,
she's had years to prepare.

unfettered by limits,
her mind now unchained;
free from constraints,
she's gained... far and away!

with joy she embraces
every hour she outlives,
with nothing to lose
she has everything to give!

each night gives her sleep,
rest reserved for the brave,
her future she's glimpsed,
she lives free...

unafraid!

this one feels undone, and yet i have nothing more on the subject.  i suppose it just means the end, like life, remains unknown... unwritten.

Memorial Day brings with it a somber hush; a reminder of sacrifices past... a realization of more to come.  as i have written here before, none of us gets out of here without any scars; and though we are living longer today than at any time previous in history, the mortality rate still stands firmly... almost resolutely... at one hundred percent!  this then begs a question- would i live differently, if i knew just how numbered my days were... and what keeps me from living that way today?

Night Vision
I see them still,
From time to time,
Their goofy smiles,
Their laughing eyes.
Still hear their *******,
Their growled complaints,
Their farts in the night,
from five bunks down.
The relentless joke telling,
The brotherly jabs.
Still see their sad empty eyes
When no mail from home arrived.

Oh and the lists of things
That they would do,
When back they'd go,
Into the World,
Added to daily, always growing.
"Get that new Camaro,
Set them tires on fire!",
"Cruise the strip back home
and pick up chicks."
"Put on my blue Class A,
And strut down the block for all to see."
"Find that foxy girl from English class,
and make her my wife".
"I'd tell my mean old man,
to actually *******!"
"I'd find that bully from back in school,
and teach that fool a thing or two."

We were but boys,
Too eager and green,
Posturing and playing at being men.
What I wonder, would they have become,
Given the chance to grow to a man?
Young lives cut short by ballistic pain.
So now still they linger, boys they remain,
Night visions left in the mud and the rain.
A Memorial Day repost of mine and respectful
salute to lost friends' in yet another needless war
that should never have been.

My first real job
was trying to glue
blown up teenagers
back together.
I was twenty, old.
I held them in my arms
and told them lies
while they cried and died.
Told them it was ok,
they were fine, going home.
Their spirits lodged in
the secret chambers
of my broken heart.
I can never forget.
Their faces stick
in in my brain
like photos in a wallet.
I will never forgive
those who sent us to die
and then treated us
like mad, pariah dogs
if we made it back.
But we knew what we knew.
He today who sheds
his blood with me
shall be my brother.

Brothers in arms.
Brothers forever.
