After a Wildfire
Shane Denison Apr 2019
The sun is overtaken
by the hill before it
Golden grass glistens
A glorification

The grass is dry
it has nothing left in it
It is susceptible
to a devouring fire

A cigarette is plunked
a spark is struck
a flame is spawned
the flame spreads

A breeze challenges the fire
like a child to his birthday cake
But more sparks fly
like new stars in the night

The field is left scorched
blackened and flat
like a sky without stars
no more light

The land is harsh
it seems nothing can grown
but give it some time
and it will flourish

Cotton candy melted
The sugar lasted for just a few seconds as it hardened on the roof of my mouth
Dad walked behind me, the boards whimpered beneath his weight
The clapping of his flip-flops halted

Eyes scanned horizontally
Lacking expression, I found myself abandoned
I continued until it was unsettled beneath the boards I paraded
Sound of waves drowned out the scene

Eyes scanned vertically
Red water washed the posts that supported my weight
Father's stare struck me
His empty face was filled by water

He lingered while I sustained movement
Walking forward, looking back
Sandals flew off my feet
Desperately, I escaped his scrutiny

I fell off the last board into the sea

Walking With Your Hand
Shane Denison Apr 2019
My hand has yours
Soft and warm
I can feel the gentle pull
from the swing of your arm

Down the street
Red Cars line the road
I love you
but you don't know yet

Rainfall
I don't look at you
I'm afraid to ruin this
Blood drops stain the sidewalk

Your hand turns cold
its stiff, there's no more pull
I finally turn to you
unable to resist

You're not there
but your hand still is
Severed at the wrist
Where are you?

I turn to search
our traveled path
You lie face down
melting into the sidewalk
