My Mistake
Sarah DeGraw Apr 2013
Most people take the best of me;
All I've got's the rest of me.
Closest to me is all I take,
my mistakes.

Long ago when I was young
A bitter soul, a selfish one
I felt the world was cruel to me
I was so blind, I could not see
The damage was only caused by me
But now I'm free; I'm wide awake
It was my mistake.

In youth we think we know so much
We take and take and push our luck
It's hard to understand how much we
Isolate and loose our dignity.
But know I'm free; I'm wide awake
I was my mistake.

Most people take the best from me
All I've got's the rest of me
Closest to me is all I take,
My mistakes.

Now I'm older I'm humbled by
Life, Death, and a world not mine
Most people are so hurt and blind
Their eyes shut tight; their words unkind
In a crowd I stand alone, but in my mind
My eyes can see; I'm wide awake
It's my mistake.

So I let most people take the best of me
All I've got's the rest of me
Closest to me is all I take,
My mistakes.

Full Gown
Sarah DeGraw Feb 2013
As a child lost in the woods,
I wait.

Soon. Some one comes to save me.

When I am grown. I am lost in the woods.

I stand up. Navigate and survive.

A Prayer
Sarah DeGraw Feb 2013
Go out into the world in peace,
But do not expect to find peace
where ever you go.

Be Strong.
Stay Calm.

Queen of Hearts
Sarah DeGraw Jan 2013
You played your cards
Lined them up one by one
A king never went down
Until another was won.

The lands you traveled
The bridges you crossed
The crowns you wore
The men whose hearts you tore

They were merely pawns
A series of moves
To cross lands unknown
You turned your heart to stone.

Charming boys, but not your prince
Cleverly, with a smile and a nod
You left your bridges open
Lighting a path of broken hearts
Marking a way to your throne.

What was it that you were looking for?
That it made you go through so many men?
Did you realize how many different garments you wore?
Didn't it make you sore?
Or was your search of the arts?

Finally, you stepped up to the throne
Your smile innocent and disarming
But the bridges burned
you step up alone.

You met your dream. You became the Queen of Hearts.

Back On My Feet
Sarah DeGraw Dec 2012
I dreamt of running.
My feet lightly tapping the pavement. The way they knew to move before the exhaustion.
The weariness.
The worry.

I dreamt of running.
The pavement saturated from a fresh rain. The air moist. The sky dark right after the twilight.
The weightlessness.
The freedom.

I dreamt of running.
It will happen again one day. My strength will return.
My feet. They know the path they need to be.
Free.

The solution lies within
Tensed. I must relax.

The Flicker of a Flame
Sarah DeGraw Dec 2012
People show their hurt in too many ways
to take offense is only building a wall
Wounding yourself from the inside out
In this world, there are too many ways
to shadow and disguise
So many tones and looks for “I'm fine.”

Support is not a push
Support is not a shove
It gently keeps you lifted
Holds you up
When you thought
There was nothing left
But to fall

Is Love the tame flames that flicker in the dead of a calm
Winter's Night?
The serene landscape of the untouched snow
Leaves no need for barriers of the fire
And all who gather forget the past and future
Only live for the moment of they require

Support is not a push
Support is not a shove
It gently keeps you lifted
Holds you up
When you thought
There was nothing left
But to fall

People show their hurt in too many ways
to take offense is only building a wall
Wounding yourself from the inside out
People show their Love in one way
They stay.
No need for the tones and looks of “I'm fine.”

Rules for the Holidays
Sarah DeGraw Dec 2012
Never buy yourself anything before a holiday
Your perspective off
Never buy yourself anything when you say your in need
Your priorities aren't straight
Never speak ill of friends and family members ever
Your missing pertinent information

Always
Take the opportunity for
A hug,
A kiss,
A hand squeeze,
A smile.

Internal Peace
Sarah DeGraw Dec 2012
I breathe in and out
Deeply
I stare and sip tea
Slowly
The quiet begins externally
Then moves to an internal peace
Permanently

— The End —
