Leaven
Sally Evans Sep 2016
When she despaired

she wrote of her tears,
how she lived without bread

and saw nothing instead
of a sense of the end,

of darkness and dearth –
she could not then see

how the skies that would clear
and the life there would be

bubbled up through the leaven
of  her hesitant words

and the words set her free.
