There’s never enough time left for me
Swinging from the rafters of the universe
A proper God adjusts his creatures
And man recollects in annotated verse

My cabbaged heart
The layers dried and peeled
Like a fleshy carnation
But brewed like camomile

I sleep beneath the vespers
I wretch until my fingers break
From my ribcage seize a bone
Take thy bread, forgive the taste

Words are rivulets
Dreadnought pamphlets
Of arrhythmic planetary spin
Let the Ayes follow you in

Bold intones, D minor
Sharp pressed cleft dictate
A child itches with the simmer
Of starlight concentrate
(The powder of the meteor
Twitching his nose)

Imagine gravity sewing the words you speak
The syllables stitching shank trade and incubation
Oh, the birth of a nation
Is best recollected in poetry
(God’s words are too powerful for my ears
But His verse is sung by man and I fear)

Let the wind catch the lungs
let the moonlight glisten
air sacs with silvery resin
fallen from the spoken words of god
huddling stars against oblivion
let the daring angels contemplate
demon dares in **** and rake
over the gliding embers of whiskey-soaked sunsets I regret.
Let my body by hers be my only poetry daring ,
daring my soul to breathe outside this tomb of childhood dragging marks across school linoleum
and university stares I dared to slip between everyone's
words after I heard that this world is loosened from reality.
That the only gravity are the legends we repeat.

It is a play, this Man
Its words loosened from earth

Imagination and the Bible verse

And from it made Believing
Under Sunday tides of breathing
She damns this Life for its Being

Writer's Block
Robert C Ellis Apr 2018
The demons’ decibel blocks situate at every opening to sunlight,
Every sliver of a mirror to the outer reaches
Of my fear of falling into the blue of sky
Past air, past God.  Into the …

Laze are the demons for gravity comes with ease
Stumbling until their blocks stifle every eve.

My grandmother does not want us to succeed.
She was but good at breeding
For we are here and we seethe

Every Bible verse rhymes with Sanctuary
The hum drum of music mimics the heartbeat
In case we forget, or we grieve Memory

She rises in a body I can’t forget, I crave; I tease.

A hotel room overlooking a Louisianan Oil Refinery
A city of stacks burning hydrocracked gasoline
The lights reflecting the constellations above; eternity
She cradles my delusions in this nursery

From the red clay . From dusted afternoons
From silly giggling holding hands
The universe moves into

The sunshine, the star's mind

Night alights her as a crown

The intellect of fashion gasping with Reaction
Outside a door I’ll never open
3,555 day incubation

The ravaged ribcage,
That ghoul beneath the peeling stage,
Gravity-bent bone, harpsichord racks
We stack with swollen amber sacs
Of vibrato beats seething with the heat of friction
From my race through an historical fiction
(Of  forged tax collector receipts
And hospital records of symptoms and disease)
I crave release,
I stand on the rim of sleep
and dare myself to leap.
                       To slip beneath the dream.

Leaflets containing turnip seed set atop the frost
For a universe fragmented into continents
Name them, grant their history
Divine the spine from the Christ, the bent

The birds take in the glassiline water
Running from the cracks in Time

The scurrilous cloud cover sprinkling brine

Whetted breaths stung with an unclaimed heart
And my hands moisten with moss
Spring balances my chest within its rhyme
The shroud and the deconstructed cross

The ferreted blade
The nave, unafraid
Of insanity, of screaming
She wields her sword
This Universe, our bruised Lord
Wrought with the battle of gravity
Blue robes woven of eternity

A single gold band atop her Crown
I peel the skin back from my hands
Place the pieces upon the ground

Her gaze unsettles God
A truth to refute the Infinite Lie
My body will mend what I have stripped

Memory is a Kaleidoscopic note,
The rope strung through childhood I yoke,
Pull until sunlight bleeds
Across a fuzzy menagerie:
Fists of curls tossed into a world of red clay,
Barcaloungers dusted with cigarette trays
Scowling autumn beasts relieved of teeth.
(The sky runs long with outstretched arms when you are three)
Or four or more and falling for the promise of alcohol,
Girls with pink breath, and the enthrall
Of a cantilevered highway along cattails and thrush
Memory girds my mind along God’s hushed

A paleo-socialistic dig; a regression of vetted meat
Slapped over the shoulders of eternity
Set in a rowboat on a re-digested sea
The butcher, the slayer and the speechmaker…
…the birth of humanity

A terse, muscle livery sack
Dear Christ, Life is just played back
Numbers cantilevering sunlight into three
Time, the Songs of Solomon, and HeartBeat

And where all hands fall to earth we piece
The iridescent architecture of the Holy Trinity
And the poet as Argonaut flung into infinity
To seethe, seize; seas, trees. To please.

Remember to breathe.
