Anberlin- A Day Late

A woman's face, is her work of fiction- Oscar Wilde

When I turned the page
The corner bent into a perfect dog ear
As if the words knew I'd need them again
I would read that page every day for a year

She sang a short tune with her eyes
And I gave her a soft, short touch
Embracing a broken heart of
A friend that I will always hold true

We sat watching wind scalp the white off the waves
Sitting on a shoreline, and if I could do it, I'd dog ear this page
We spoke about growing old and filling the future's empty stage
By saving those children from a far away place

I hope the weather holds
But you don't need the sun to make it shine
These island towns don't care for city folk
But I think we can starve the city from our minds

I know we won't want for much
But I never want our lives to part fully
To keep a healthy connection even if
It's just me, you, a friendship, and a shoreline
One of my favorite songs

Cover, Concealment, Cognizance
These are the three "C's" of our confidence
Shut up, adapt and overcome
We are Recon and we don't succumb

You will be alone out there and out numbered
But it is essential that your intel is rendered
If the enemy sees you, you're already dead
Control your breathing, aim for the head

You don't have to agree with this war to fight
Just defend your brothers to your left and right
Sadly we are not gods, so there will be casualties
But let's make sure they are mostly the enemy's

When you strap in the black-hawk to leave down range
Don't panic, control your breathing. It will be a big change
You've worked so hard to survive, now wash your eyes
Don't let anything come back home and cause your demise
Rough draft, will clean up later

Let me talk straight and apply some clarity
I realize you like complication and chaos
Your thought process is of a recently un-caged animal
Being young and open minded are typically good
Without the right application it is self destructive

Why do you continue to sedate your life
You thirst for something real and genuine
Yet you set your lens to blur
Quenching with useless suppression

Why desire nothing tangible, just illusions
A life full of double sided mirrors
Your favorite trick is disappearing
Magic hurts,remember the matches?

There is so much life you could give to this world
Why be an old unopened wine, selfish and closed
Your storm could bring air to failing lungs
Your flood would give water to the thirsty
Your beauty can shine life into a dying soul

When you talk people listen, so what are you saying
Why persist on a foundation of mud and sand
Putting so much effort in slipping and falling
Learn to stand and fight instead of falter
Want something permanent? Pour some concrete

I dislike writing poems
I dislike them because they force me to dig deep
Deeper than I am comfortable digging
It unearths my uncertainties
Exposing soft spots in my facade

I base most decisions on information gathered
What happens when info is left out
I mean the IMPORTANT stuff
How can you make a critical decision
When people blindfold you from the truth
Most people think they know it all even the gray stuff
But from mouth of someone trusted, you doubt anything

Why do we use our brains so often
Our thoughts change like a clock's tick
Should we not consult out hearts a little more
It seems to change alot less frequently.....

Any storm can be calmed
Intelligence is useless with out common sense
Timing helps the substance pertain
Why drop the bombshell too late
Now all is left is the aftershock
Nothing can be effected just felt.....
It is useless, even poisonous

But hey a little smoke signal would have been nice
Silence is a hard hitter, trust me
Is poetry just our thoughts in code words
If so I might end up liking poetry
