Former Self
Ray Rhekorn Feb 2011
It's almost two in the afternoon,
the sun is out, birds whistle their tune.
From this mountain top I can see,
with crystal clear clarity,
the former land I used to stay
far, far away from play.

A butterfly lands on my arm,
“I see you've found the secret”, says its gaze.
I nod and say without alarm,
“I've stepped out of the maze”.

Then it lifted up and away
and my eyes followed to the city below,
I saw joy smothered by dismay;
frozen ebb craving flow.

I wanted to feel grief
but that passed in a blink,
all I had was relief
that I was free to think.

It's almost three in the afternoon,
the sun is out, birds whistle their tune.
From this mountain top I can see,
with crystal clear clarity,
the former land I used to stay
far, far away from play.

My sweat attracts the dust
and I begin to smear.
Still, I'm confident in my trust
that I'm supposed to be here.

My hair is long and mangled,
filled with grease and grime,
it protrudes out every angle
a tangible fragment of time.

The cool breeze blows by
whispering secrets never heard,
in an original lullaby,
never observed by the herd.

It's almost four in the afternoon,
the sun is out, birds whistle their tune.
From this mountain top I can see,
with crystal clear clarity,
the former land I used to stay
far, far away from play.

Part Three: UNTIL I BELIEVE
Ray Rhekorn Nov 2010
dark, rainy day; gray
a misunderstood thunder
it's the cheer of life

but what is this gray
if not just the other half
of our charming world

only visible
through contrasts of each other
both necessary

I see beauty now
it can shine so bright, or lurk
hiding from the light

life always goes on
even when you think it won't
learn to persevere

here, a small secret
everyone has fears, like yours
they are all hiding

insecurities
blossoming as moldy spores
only when ignored

self improvement works
it's just about not breaking
any promises

easier said, true
start small, sweat the little things
pile them to the sky

resist innate urge
to focus on your results
keep as afterthoughts

only behavior
day in, day out, that matters
it's all that matters

before you make it
fake it, then believe the act
realize it's real

it's as they all say
better to burn out, or else
you might fade away

search for something great
it must both excite your soul
and frighten the mind

the effort to act
always ******* by the treasure
fulfilling your deed

nothing without risk
fear not your greatest failures
for they pave progress

find your own genius
far from innate, it takes toil
unfathomed labor

Dominance
Ray Rhekorn Nov 2010
In the morning I look out
through the trees in my yard that gently sway,
reacting to the soothing blows,
past the homes and up into the fray.
Soon I'll be out there, sitting
amongst the clouds, observing my domain,
calmly witnessing as time stops
and wanes importance as I remain.

The Toast
Ray Rhekorn Nov 2010
I was asked to give a speech,
I remember when you rang.
“I need to ask a favor”,
“That's not a favor”, I sang.

“So you can do it?”, you pried,
I responded only, “Yes.”
The pretense of long friendship,
And luck you'd claim God did bless.

Since it is your wedding day,
I know gallant it must be.
And while our take is weighty,
The audience must agree.

I'll reveal exploits in jest,
Tall tales of a younger You.
What they don't know, never will,
Those gritty details aren't true.

“Well good evening, everyone.
I'm here for these two lovers,
Who have pledged their lives this day,
and forsaking all others”.

“In conclusion, look at them;
Just perfectly meant to be.
But I don't know them at all,
Keep that between you and me”.

Rainy Day
Ray Rhekorn Nov 2010
When you live in paradise,
a rainy day can feel even more
gloomy.
But
it's just another contrast of life
like joy and sorrow,
or pleasure and pain.
Thank god for the rain.

Autumn
Ray Rhekorn Nov 2010
I looked deep into your eyes
as my fingertips grasped your hips, pulling,
pressing you into me.
“I love you”, you said
and I smiled.
“I'm sorry, Darling, for letting you go”, I choked
with tears of regret clouding my vision.
Your eyes softened with your smile
that felt like the warmth of the sun.
“It's alright Baby, don't cry, we're still together
because I never let go of you”.
I smelled the coconut lotion on your arms
as they draped over my shoulders and clasped together
around the back of my neck.
I closed my eyes and pressed my forehead against yours, trying
to hold on to the moment forever.

When I woke up
soaked in sweat,
you were gone.
You've been gone a while now
because when I let go so long ago,
so did you.
