Knowing You
Rae Jett Sep 2012
Some said I was strange
when I spoke to the faeries in our garden
you proudly called me unique

Most  reprimanded as I stumbled and fell
while skipping across the room
you just smiled and helped me up again

Others laughed and stared
as I danced and twirled
you grinned and placed me on your toes

Everyone cried when you left us
they said I never really knew you
I know we knew each other best

I Wanted To Be A Butterfly
Rae Jett Apr 2012
I was brought up dancing barefoot to the music of the world
My parents said I could be who I wanted
And my dreams were my own
At the time that meant I wanted to be a butterfly
But I was also told that everyone is different
What may be “normal” to me could be unthinkable to you
And that’s ok because while
We may never see eye to eye
We may never eat from the same table
We may never shop at the same stores
We may not listen to the same music or dance the same way
I have a respect for you
And all that you do
The only thing I will ever ask of you
Is for you to respect me too
Don’t look down on me for who I love or what I believe
Just remember that our dreams are different and always have been

When you were young did you ever believe you would be
The person standing in front of me?
Or did you want to be a butterfly?
I for one never thought that far ahead
My mind then was only concerned with thinking new thoughts
Well… new to me
About all the wonders of this world and what I could do with them
As I got older it seemed the world became smaller
The adventures around my Grandmother’s block were no longer exciting
My thoughts were no longer new or wonderful just different from some others
Is that how you felt as you got older?
Will you even answer these questions or do you not deem them important?
What do you deem important?
You don’t have to tell me your answer
But I will tell you mine
For me it’s dancing barefoot in the moonlight
Listening to the music of the world
Dreaming new dreams
And thinking new thoughts
But also I truly believe that speaking to you is just as important
As it was for me to dream of that butterfly
