This reminded me of an incident from my teenage year, visiting an Abbey where my mom went to school on the other side of Canada years before. There was a women who just kind of wandered the halls like a ghost, she didn't seem to be responding to anything going around her. I didn't want to be rude and ask, but on old nun noticed me watching her and offered,"That poor girl lost her entire family in a house fire and has been like that ever since". I asked, "How long has she been here?", "Oh, it must be over 30 years now". I was stunned that someone could be in shock for so long. Your poem reminds me of that shorter but probably almost as intense shock we go through after losing someone from our lives, either to death or a broken relationship. I swear the words you use, I can picture that lost older women, searching in vain for a family dead so many years.
