The folds of a satin robe Half her face serene and gold You wish time didn't exist here Sinking and no will to persevere A painter would turn to the reds Mix the oils with their own hands Frameless, guiltless as a mourning dove Knowing no brush could save your drown She glares her eyes asking you why Soft creases, the icing that wraps the cake But before the yum is over The sand you swallow gives you wake Harsh is the voice coming from her lips You beg for the forgiveness you think you're owed The sand is under your fingernails It's trapped under your eyelids As you remember those nights in the city The ones where silky sheets And seamless pillow cases Kept her face half-covered, serene and gold You plead and you ask Wondering how the city lights Went dark so fast The quicksand steals your last breath You wish time never existed at all She slips off her satin robe, a maiden unwarned And blinks away the static you forced onto her

A Totem Pole in Sinking Sands
