The fact that the protagonist feels the numbness...is an indication of feeling, at least....once that wears off, it is painful....like pins and needles....hence the want to keep the numbness!
A really brilliant individual recently gave such great advice, re: pain.....said to work WITH it, not only THROUGH it....and I tried, albeit half-heartedly at first.....well, must admit....it sure helped!
Led to some creative ink-spills :)
