If I were to live
a thousand years
learn the name
of every bird and rock
and tree
learn the cypher
to every unknown thing
Oh, how dark
would that unknown country
still be to Me
Oh, mystery of mysteries
Oh, what the cypher?
What the key?
how Your heart beats
out a rhythm
all unknown
Oh, Your face
mystery all unread
Oh, is there a love
that lives for Me
in Your mysterious soul
Oh, darkest of continents
heart of all darkness
all untrod and unread
mysterious wild creature
beating in the dark
Oh, do You hold in your unknown embrace
a cup of mercy
to be poured out for Me?
or a cup
of loveless numbing poison?
Oh, how I wish
You would come hither
and end this foolish madness
Oh, how long I have hoped
to lay My head
upon Your breast
to listen to Your beating heart
unravel the mystery
sealed by God
at the moment
of the universes fiery creation
Oh, the ocean is so shallow
compared to Your heart
Oh, heart
how I fear You!
fear Your mystery
revealed
make it swift
Oh, please make it swift!
if it is My door to despair!
Oh, though My love be hopeless
or though our love be the door
to eternal delight
it shall forever shine in the darkness
to lift You up if you ever fall
as the sun shines in the darkness
to give its to the world below
though You love Me
yes or no
you shall always remain
the reason
that I live and hope and pray
