A Simple Man

He said, "I am a simple man"

But I see layers

Of complexity

Like the roots

Of a tall sturdy tree

Reaching deeper

Down into the earth

Joining with the souls

Of those who died

In war

Joining with the hearts

of those who mourned

Their loss

Joining with those he called family

Those who called him son

Those who called him lover

Those who called him husband

Those who called him father

Those who called him friend
