May 2014
They walked together in the hallway
Every day between classes.
Her long curly hair cascaded down her back
Like a russet-colored waterfall.
His straight hair was trimmed to perfection.
They talked and smiled at each other
Two pairs of warm brown eyes filled with what could be
Mutual admiration.
After a lingering goodbye and a not-quite brush of hands,
When she turned to the left and he continued straight ahead,
They both left each other with smiles on their faces.
Once they admitted their feelings,
It was sure that they would be happy together.
If only that was how it worked for others.
For you see, another girl passed the boy every day.
She witnessed their lingering goodbyes,
The way they talked and laughed,
The girl's beautiful hair,
The boy's brown eyes, noticed them
Every single day.
And each time she did, she smiled ruefully,
Hoping that the boy and the girl would be happy together,
So at least the ratio would be two to one.
