Not the Cake

by jack-r-fehlmann

I barely recollect that flavor Long since those times those years myself much much younger The vanilla-apple spectrum That I confess slid like butter over a much more narrow pallet Deluded as a first-taste take of the world My foolhearty youthfulness far too keen To imagined thoughts, believe scripted screens fed t.v. dinners while lies held eyes stuck like taffy First-ever color t.v. screens, problems all solved Love and picture perfect outcomes guaranteed No directions, no warning, smiling studio laughter To grow up and find life will have moments Hurts and sorrows, bitter bile-like choices And once-sweet-forevers will spoil, turn sour Swallow rotten; you too will become wasn't mentioned as the hero saves the bullshit day Happy is a candle on top a cake, enjoyed now and then never everyday Meant to herald, to celebrate, life is not the icing Not the layered cake. Life is that little flame, bright and burning Then traced by whisps if smoke Quickly fading when blown away.
