Summer Rolling In

Early May arrives in pink and white,

Blossoms waking in the morning light.

Soft winds carry petals through the air,

Like tiny butterflies dancing everywhere.

Busy bees hum golden through the day,

While sleepy daffodils quietly fade away.

They rest beneath the warming earth below,

Waiting for next spring to bloom and glow.

Bluebells gather deep within the green,

Ringing gentle tunes in woodland scenes.

Listen closely — you may hear them sing,

The happy sound of summer entering.

Fresh-cut grass drifts sweet upon the breeze,

Evergreens sway softly through the trees.

Birdsong rises in a joyful choir,

Morning melodies that never tire.

Warm afternoons and glowing sunset skies,

Clouds painted gold as daylight slowly dies.

I lounge and watch nature’s grand display,

Her leafy cabaret in full array.

Trees hum low with ancient summer song,

Flowers bloom brightly all season long.

And truly, what more could anyone deem

Than sunshine, strawberries, and thick fresh cream?

So here I sit beneath skies of blue,

Dreaming sweet summer dreams anew.

I wrote this today after stopping at traffic lights and watching blossom cover the windscreen like drifting butterflies. The image stayed with me through a 5km treadmill run, where the poem slowly formed in my head. By the time I got home, it was ready for pen to paper. “Summer Rolling In” is the result — and yes, I’m quite pleased with it.
