What courage used to be

Do you see the face in fire? The way it screams in agony The way it wants the pain to stop But you don’t help Not because you don’t want to But because you’re scared to get burned So you stand there, frozen still, Watching embers kiss the air Like fragile, fleeting cries for help That vanish into nowhere And maybe you tell yourself There’s nothing you could do That flames like these are far too wild To let someone pass through But deep inside, a quieter voice Keeps whispering your name Asking why you turned away And who’s really to blame Because the fire doesn’t just consume The face you chose to see- It lingers in the hollow space Where courage used to be And long after the ashes fall And silence fills the night You’ll wonder if you could’ve been The one who brought the light
