Austere Night

The austere night falls down on empty rooms,

where silence resides, unbroken and still;

a lone voice echoes through the somber veil,

unanswered, faint against a weary will.

The shadows encroach, reaching ever far,

consuming where faint light once dared remain;

no flicker now resists the pressing dark,

as night lays claim to all it would contain.
