Two Voices

There are two voices inside my head

One speaks for the living

One for the dead

The first wants to see me prospering

While the second seeks my suffering

One inspires faith and is unconcerned with beliefs

One inflicts doubt and revels in resultant miseries

The caring voice advises to always love without withholding

While the cruel voice admonishes such weakness with scolding

One guides me with peaceful concepts for a serene life

One drives me with painful precepts of eternal strife

The one states that I should be ever-patient and kind

While the other screams foul obscenities in my mind

Only one answers prayers or cares for intelligent reason

One scoffs at hope and responds only, "We are Legion"

This one is faithful and loves all living things equally

While that one knows only betrayal and brutality

One sustains me and sees that my spirit is fed

One devours me and sees my soul as its bread

There are two voices inside my head

One speaks for the living

One for the dead
