George "lucky" Blake

by @AndrewT

George "lucky" Blake I was just a guy from Salford Only married for a short while When neville called upon me and sent up to camp Carlisle They trained me to be a hero But we didn't wear no cape They gave us combat uniforms And renamed me gunner Blake A soldier friend returned from leave His news left me in bits The nazis came to Manchester And rained the Salford blitz We stole passes from our barracks And chanced our arms awol We hitched a ride to Bolton I was 20 miles short Via a train I got to Davies St In the middle of the night The whole of Salford seem on fire Which set the sky alight Half the house was bombed Bricks scattered across the ground I chambered on to find my wife but she could not be found I crept passed the home guard post set up on my street They were armed with rifles but lucky they were asleep Suddenly it occurred to me to check the in-laws house And there I found Alice my wife, sleeping on the couch I stayed for 6 more days Before I returned to hadrians camp My comrads hid my bedding so I wouldn't be found out I never was discovered I put that down to fate They don't call me gunner anymore I'm known as "lucky blake"
