sometimes the cat chases the sparrow through the long grass as the sun sets and the air cools with blood rushing hot and the sparrow's wings are broken and the cat is smiling and the sparrow is trying to run on talons not built for that sort of movement and the cat is telling the sparrow that some of us are just biologically superior and honestly prey should just roll over and submit all while walking at a leisurely pace and the sparrow wheezes a breath maybe its ribs have been crushed maybe the cat is feeling playful and the sparrow says i know you like the chase and the cat says my darling this is hardly a chase for me and the sparrow says then come and take me and the cat does
and sometimes the sparrow sets a trap and drops a rock on the cat's head and pecks at its underbelly scratches with its talons and tries to draw blood it never does of course but it leaves marks and that's honestly enough for it because it knows other animals are gonna see this cat with scratches on its underbelly and those scratches were caused by me and it must be love if the persistence hunter keeps choosing me to chase
