every group
each tribe or nation
certainly every religion
has signs and symbols
initiation ceremonies, rituals
membership cards, passports
shared activities and actions
core archetypes of identity
all adding up to belonging
I am, you are part of .....

on the eve of Passover
as the lambs were sacrificed
unleavened bread broken
wine of blessing poured
he took that bread and wine
'this is my body, my blood
broken, poured out for you'
himself the Passover lamb
body yet to be broken
blood still to be daubed
on the upright, the lintel
of the cross, that doorway
to God's saving love and justice
and we are invited in, to be a part
joined, belonging, incorporated
in all that was accomplished
by the mystery of the cross
communion in self-giving love
what then does this opting in
require of, mean for us, for me
