Feeding the Squirrels and Birds at Dawn

A squirrel sits upon a little mound of corn
And faces the east with its nimble forepaws
Clasped gently together as if in prayer
Yes, we know that the squirrel is scanning and sniffing for hawks, coyotes, and dogs, or perhaps for another squirrel it wants to beat up; still, we must layer some romance over the scene.
