I like trivia, trivia. Trivia’s an important element of my work. I have a character, for instance, named Sylvia, in my story “Juvenilia,” and I depict her angst by having her recite bits of trivia to everyone she meets. Sylvia wants to be popular, so she learns all about anorexia -- especially famous cases like Liz Taylor, Mama Cass, and Karen Carpenter. I’ve created this powerful character by reading The National Enquirer. So there’s nothing trivial about trivia in the hands of a great practitioner.
