I am an over-ambitious achiever
Who holds the highest of high standards
Even though I come from a family
Who holds nothing to their name

When you look at me you see
unruly coarse hair
With rough skin
And a small body

What you don’t see
are the constant sleepless nights
And the long work hours
so that I may obtain
A normal life.

This work is important to me because
I don’t want others like me
To waste their lives
So that they may get
the same privileges
As their peers

Equity will begin with acknowledgment.
