You can pull up the carpet
And paint the walls
But the violence I saw
Still lingers

You can install new windows
And replace the furniture
But the screaming I heard
Still lingers

You can plant a garden
And replace the fence
But the prison I knew
Still lingers

I can spend years away
And do my best to heal
But the damage you’ve done
Still lingers
