Alone at the bar
As I finished the show
I caught his eye and he nodded
‘Hello’
I watched as he drained the last slug from his glass
Ordered another, and muttered
‘Hey Lord, kiss my ***!’

He wasn’t a drunkard or some down and out
Just a good guy who needed to let the pain out
So I packed my guitar
And pulled up a stool
His tears filled his shot glass
Then he said ‘I can see you’re no fool’
But I lost her today
I watched her slip away,
I cried as she tried, but she couldn’t hang on.
Then she closed her eyes,
And I had to say goodbye
There should be some other way
But I’m too alone and he cried

‘Lord,take me instead
or take me too
There’s nothing much that I ever ask of you
But I’m down on my knees
It’s all  I can do
So take me instead
Or take me too

I don’t believe in a
Higher plan
There’s nobody up there
God’s just a man
And I’m sorry to burden you
But I lost my girl today
And you’ve got a kind face
Then I cried when he told me
Just what he’d said

‘Lord,take me instead
or take me too
There’s nothing much that I ever ask of you
But I’m down on my knees
It’s all  I can do
So take me instead
Or take me too
Take me instead
Or take me too
