without warning-
a sound sparks
an errant memory
which leaves me
             suddenly
     off
                               balance
a moment of courage
replaced
by an hour of doubt

confidence
turns
skeptical

reasoning
becomes
questioning
with no answer
to assuage
increasing unease

I step to the mirror
desperately searching for recognition
in the face looking back

shapes transform as they come into focus

insecurities surface

leaving me to drown...
                                in a pool of reflection...
