Breaking free from the line
I had formed in my mind,
I ran all the way to your door.
"It's been years," you proclaimed
as old passions inflamed.
"My dear, any port in a storm."
In this case, "line" refers to a battle formation, such as soldiers on the front "line." In the context of this poem, the narrator is at war with a figment of his own mind.
