a mousetrap was set for the mouse
as it entered
the door.

a cat tried to catch the mouse
with fiery eyes
with skinny bones
with taut skin,
but it failed.

the mouse was fatigued and withering.
but its nose dragged its flesh
to a scent.
saliva poured from its mouth
through aching teeth.
a mouthful of peanut butter was its last taste.

the mouse's neck snapped in the trap.
I wonder if I told it
"there is a trap Mr. mouse." if it would improve its quality of life?
who knows.
its got the peanut butter in its mouth
still.

a mousetrap was set for the mouse
as it entered
the door.
