My Heart and Mind had a discussion one day,
About a term that they both knew quite well.
The heated discussion continued for hours,
Both with arguments meant to compel.
A debate ensued between the two,
With each taking a different perspective.
The Heart believed love to be true,
And the Mind thought it was deceptive.
Heart started the discussion with an obvious point,
"Love is something which everyone seeks for."
Mind responded smugly, "That's great in the moment
but the concept of unconditional love doesn't really exist "
Heart countered, already knowing the point being made.
"Sure, there may be some hate and jealousy;
It's what makes love grow stronger,
And true love is what matters most of all."
"I disagree," and Mind continued to say,
"Actions mean far more than words alone.
It is when words and actions are considered together
that true feelings are shown."
"Logical explanation doesn't exist in me."
Heart continued to defend her intentions,
When I say 'I love you' my feelings are real,
but sometimes I may seem too complicated."
"It's funny you would mention complexity.
Apparently your memory isn't as sharp as mine,
Your statements don't always align."
And Mind continued...
"For It's easy to say I love you when you are face to face.
It's easy to say I love you when you are inside someone.
It's easy to say I love you when they are caring for you.
But is that really LOVE?"
Heart stayed silent for a moment,
Not knowing what to say further;
So, My mind continued to state it's points,
"Think about it, if you love someone because of a certain reason or expectation, then it's never really true love;
It's not easy to say I love you when they want nothing to do with you.
It's not easy to say I love you when you know they don't love you.
It's not easy to say I love you when they disagree with you.
It's never easy to love anyone without being selfish."
"You are cynical, suspicious and guarded."
Heart was clearly tired of this dispute,
"Those traits are clouding your judgement.
My Love is genuine and I'm telling the truth."
"I think you are overlooking the obvious but
I'll relax and stop doubting your intentions
if you could show me a simple sign of true love?"
Heart and Mind both wanting to prove their point
and have the bragging rights of superiority.
Mind thought that it won the debate
But the heart continued to explain...
"I don't love you because I need you, I need you because I love you.
Love is not a feeling, or an emotional connection, or an opportunity not to be alone.
Love is dedication, a choice to knit your heart and soul to another because
nobody else can compare to the joy, peace, affection, and trustworthiness that you have.
So,let us love each other without a doubt,
Because without you, I wouldn't exist,
And without me your existence would make no sense.
My love for you is forever.
You may never understand this, but it's the deepest part of my love for you."
Mind got a bit emotional at the moment,
It didn't utter a word further,
And simply embraced the heart,
With a complete sense of gratitude.
