Celebration

Green and yellow lights above

Dancing on the horizon

Twisting and leaping to and fro

Joyful spirits in celebration

They race across the sky

From horizon to horizon

I can almost hear their laughter

Like so many kids at play

The sky is their playground

The stars the only contrast to their brilliance

Dancing and playing these lights above

Silent laughter on a blanket of stars

Dancing to the music of the night

Playing a game known only to them

I sit and watch this celebration

The night sounds my only company

I lose track of time here

The hours flowing one to another

What do they celebrate each clear night?

What makes the spirits of light so joyous?

Only they know the answers

Many nights did I bear witness

Watching in silent wonder

I promise myself to never forget

This sight I see before me

These lights and all their splendor

Dancing and playing their games

All across the northern sky

Do they see me watching,

These northern lights?

Do they see me smile at their fun?

"Well, my friends," I whisper softly

"It is late and I must rest."

I close my eyes reluctantly

And fall into a dream

I am up there dancing

Across the clear night sky
