You were attracted to her beauty that was more than skin deep Not knowing that even her ******* would one day Fall like the walls of Jericho
You picked the best flower in the garden Not knowing that even the prettiest rose has thorns
Her colour, being the passport to paradise Was the reason you clothed yourself in inferiority
Not knowing that even her kind when exposed to the sun, could change colour like disguised chameleons
Her walks, hips swayed left and right Had you conformed to western beliefs, forsaking your clan names and rejecting your true identity
Not knowing that even walks can be practiced You toss and turn at night for your blackness keeps lingering like a bad breath
Short to say You have forgotten who you are!
This poem was inspired by my encounter with an interracial couple. The guy was black and the lady was white. What really struck me was the guy's submissiveness towards her almost undermining himself because she's white. I then decided to make a sheer highlight of the fact that historical background might have created white supremacy but that doesn't mean that as a black person you should belittle yourself. We are all human and flawed in some way so we should embrace ourselves.
