“Hands up!” the soldier shouts.
“Don’t shoot!” he cries.
“What will you do for your wife’s life?”
Tears, tears stream down her face.
“I, Sir, will take her place.”
“You?” he asks.
“Yes,” he says.
“Why would you give up your life?”
“She’s my wife; I’m one in Christ
With her, Sir, and I am called
To lay down myself, my life, my all,
To love her as Christ loves His Bride, His church.
He willingly gave His life for her.
Therefore I’ll die in my wife’s place.
Whatever the outcome, my wife is safe
Entrusted in God’s faithful care.”
The soldier lets down his gun and stares.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.”
