Memories still scar me,
like the tattoos that never fade away.
Memories still haunt me,
Like the screams of my older sister, brutally slain
Memories still shake me,
Like the wailing sobs that were silenced the next day.

Every second, minute and hour,
I try everything to leave my memories behind,
But they still torment me as they continuously unwind.
Every day, week and month,
I try everything to find freedom and justice,
Begging to leave the never- ending cries to stop injustice.

My mind still continuously lurks to tell me,
Soft memories once lived there,
Of love, happiness and peace.
Of waking up to see the rare smile on my father
Or of the creaks and squeaks of my brother’s bike,
All of this was once a significant part of me.

Memories come flooding to me of that day,
When everything was snatched from me.
The torturing sounds of the sirens,
The dark stages of violence,
And the land reeking of blood;
Were nothing compared to the memories I could no longer bear.

My mind still reminds me of,
The screeches escaping from my family,
The tears that wouldn’t escape,
And The screams that wouldn’t be heard,
I can still feel,
The popping blisters from the prosperous fire,
The booming sobs of the children,
And the bodies shattering to pieces.

I begged to forget the remembrance,
That while my country was suffering from the deathly war,
while those evil people have destroyed us,
snatching away our peace,
That they've destroyed our precious culture.
The culture we longed to gain.
Generation after generation, we have raised our children,
How could you get rid of us one by one until we too are extinct?

Those memories are my past,
A past that I must forget,
yet I don’t want to.
This new land, this joyful land,
is where I can peacefully leave my old memories
And finally start making new ones.
