Mother's Milk
Mother hit me
with the cutting
board for years -
until it broke
across my five
year old body.
She's mourned the
board ever since,
apparently it was
a real favorite.
Then she'd chase
me, with her hand
like a mouth, saying
"Alligator, alligator,"
and pinching me
terribly if she
caught me,
laughing,
laughing,
she was
laughing.
