I know the rules,
we are both involved with another.
We’ve been down this road,
too many times actually.
We can’t be together,
at least that’s what we say.
We try to convince ourselves,
it’s just for now.
Sometimes that helps,
but mostly it doesn’t.

You haven’t broken any rules,
no, far from it.
You have done exactly as you said,
as We said.
But knowing it’s still happening,
while I’ve sidelined myself,
just hurts.
You didn’t ask me to forego,
and I’d never ask that of you.
But having made the change,
I was so hoping you would as well.

I love how you play by the rules,
I can’t thank you enough,
but for once I was hoping you’d follow my lead.
