We are not star-crossed
The air didn't magically lock tight inside my
chest the first time our eyes met

Our initials aren't carved in any trunk or any tree

You are not the air I breathe
Not every thought that runs in my head

No, we are not star-crossed
There is no such thing

But we can bask in the warmth of a sun that does not shine for us
Bathe in an ocean filled in thousands of years before we were born
Meet white-tipped clouds that pay no mind to the beat of our hearts
Run around valleys deaf to the thump of our footsteps

We are not star-crossed dear
But we can certainly pretend to be
