As I fell, I wasn’t mad.
There were many reasons to be. The concrete, the bricks, the noise.
But all I remember is intense relief. The air brushed past my face.
And as I felt the air, I saw my children.
Running toward me as I walked out of the car.
I saw my wife wipe her hands on her nightgown. I saw her tired face, the greying hairs.
But I also saw the smile.
They clung to me.
In their embrace, I felt free.
I felt my heart. I could feel it grow.
I was brought back to the rushing air by the wetness of my face.
And then.
White.
